Default Food & Exercise -- 12/25/2004

Had a delightful, self-indulgent day. We made breakfast at my mom's
apartment, hung around reading and talking and calling relatives, went
to a lavish afternoon buffet meal in the dining room of the retirement
community, then hung out some more watching TV and talking, then had a
small evening snack. DH and I are back in our hotel room now.

Food:

* 9:15 (Mom's apartment): 2 scrambled eggs; 3 slices of bacon; large
cinnamon roll
* 2:00 (holiday buffet): 4 oz. shrimp cocktail; 3 oz. assorted smoked
fish -- trout, salmon, mussels; 1 oz. turkey breast; 1 oz. pork
tenderloin; 1 oz. sweet potato; 1 oz. Brussels sprouts; 1/2 cup turkey
stuffing; 2 oz. gravy; small bits of about 5 different desserts (peanut
butter cheesecake, chocolate mousse, carrot cake, strawberry cake,
small cookie) -- I figure the equivalent of two regular desserts; 6 oz.
champagne
* 7:30 (Mom's apartment): 1/2 oz. summer sausage; 1 oz. Swiss cheese

Totals: 2380 calories (129 from wine), 103g fat (39%), 222g carbs
(37%), 111g protein (19%)

Averages for the week: 1778 calories, 33% fat, 38% carbs, 26% protein
{Over my goal of 1650, but not outrageously so.}
Exercise: None, really.

Here's my Xmas day binge:

9:00AM: 10" of french bread; three Belgian chocolate truffles; four
rice cakes (140 calories total for rice cakes)

6:00PM: little bites of chicken, ham, glass noodles with shreds of
pork, a few bits of ground fish, a bowl of a coconut milk and sweet
potato dessert, a slice of fruit tart, a slice of apple tart, a slice
of mango cake

2:30PM: ten rounds around the local park; about five miles...ran 7,
walked 3.

i have no idea how much i consumed or burned today, but i think i did
okay for it being xmas??!

Certainly less than I ate! And I didn't get any exercise. So from my
perspective you did just fine!

Those tarts were bad news. See how my eating patterns center around
sweets and dessert and not "real" food? Bah! The other day I felt I was
having a sugar coma because I ate about thirty cookies that were filled
with molasses and brown sugar. Yes, thirty!

When is your next indulgent episode? New year's eve? Or was this Xmas
the end of a horrible season of the year for people who are watching
what they put in their mouths?

I don't consider this a horrible season at all! I enjoy indulging now
and again, and have done it all along on special occasions without any
apparent ill effects on my weight loss. Maybe I'd have lost faster if
I'd never done it, but I'd not have felt as content with my life :-).
And I still lost over 120 lbs. in just under two years, and have kept
it off for 6 months now. But I don't eat with complete abandon (never
30 cookies -- and I too have done that in my life) -- and my capacity
isn't such that I can eat truly huge quantities of food. But the key
is that I always get back on track again. And I think my level of
exercise has speeded up my metabolism to the point where I can handle
these occasional splurges without a problem.

Regarding the next time: Thursday 12/30 is our 15th wedding
anniversary, so we'll probably go out for a meal then and enjoy
ourselves. We have no particular plans for New Year's Eve, and I'd
just as soon stay home that night, but we'll see what develops.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your thoughts. You are truly an inspiration for all of us
out there. I love to hear your narratives about the size fours --it's a
great motivator! I always try to get back on track, but then often end
up falling. For example, today I went to the gym from 9:30AM, did yoga
for an hour and then cardio for about an hour, and weights for about
thirty minutes. I left the gym at 1:00PM after a shower and everything,
and according to all the caloric measurements I burned about a thousand
calories. I came home, had two rice cakes and a few bites of dried
fruit, and then headed to the mall for those infamous holiday returns.
I must have walked over a mile at the mall as I parked at the farthest
possible (and only available) parking spot. I spent about three hours
walking around the cursed mall; who knows how many calories I burned!

I had a very long (four hour!) hair appointment, which kept me from
having dinner. After my appointment, I went out for vegetarian Chinese
food (read: unhealthy gluten, etc.) with a friend. We had tofu with
veggies, cashews with water chestnut and fake chicken, and fried fake
fish with a bean sauce. I had probably about 1/3 a cup of the three
dishes, in addition to about a cup and a half of brown rice. It was my
only real "meal" of the day (I probably only took in less than 200
calories earlier in the day), but I felt it was indulgent, seeing how
good I was with exercise and not eating heavily today (because I had
eaten so much the day before).

Tomorrow is more yoga and cardio, and less eating! I am having an
amazing lunch on Tuesday, so I must conserve my calories for that. The
holidays always manage to rip me a new one!

This sounds like quite a healthy day, both from the eating and
exercise perspectives. Chinese food isn't the healthiest thing in the
world, but you made decent choices and didn't overeat. It's good to
try to eat a bit more during the earlier part of the day if you can.
If I'm going to be away from the house for a long time I try to always
have something like an energy bar with me.

Chris
