Default WebMD article on dairy calcium and belly fat (with commentary)

_Eat Yogurt, Lose Belly Fat
Dairy Calcium in Diet Melts Fat Abs_

You can read the article he
http://my.webmd.com/content/article/63/72093.htm

Commentary/quibbles: (1) The researchers didn't give the control group
equivalent calcium supplementation to match the "yogurt" group --
400-500mg vs. 1100mg. (2) The following statement sounds kind of
suspect: "Not only did yogurt help the study participants lose more
weight -- the average weight loss was 13 pounds -- they were about
twice as effective at maintaining lean muscle mass...". No mention
was made of overall protein intake for both groups. I'm guessing that
wasn't properly controlled for either.

A little bit of research will show that over the past few years, Michael
Zemel has been given enormous funding grants by the dairy industry. More
than two million dollars are publicly recorded. Make your own mind up as
to how "unbiased" his research findings might be.

I have noted that in places where yogurt is traditionally consumed in
large quantities, there does not seem to be any indication that belly
fat is lessened. When I was a kid, I lived in Holland for a while,
everyone ate yogurt, most of the adults had prominent bellies. Perhaps
the Dutch can't make yogurt as well as Michael Zemel can, or maybe
someone forgot to pay them to suck in their bellies. g

Don't get me wrong, I love yogurt, I still eat it daily, I think that it
has nutritional benefit, but some of the stories about it rank with Hans
Christian Andersen's best work.

David
