This can't be normal....
I wonder if anyone else has done this... it's a problem I had a lot as a younger kid... I guess I hated seeing other people waste good food, one thing that really ****ed me off when I was growing up for instance is when in the school cafeteria on the days when he'd have those delicious rolls and I didn't get have any (I was usually too poor to buy my lunch, had to pack mine from mom) and it would make me angry that I'd go by the trash can and see PERFECTLY GOOD ROLLS throw away! You can substitute this with just about any other type of food that I'd like (for some reason thrown away vegetables didn't bother me) but anything that I would have liked... And I'm not talking something with a bite out of it that was tossed, that wouldn't bother me I don't guess. I mean, someone at least ate part of it, but a whole food tossed away? AHHH! I hate to admit this but sometimes when I was younger, when no one was looking, if the food looked "okay" i'd reach in and take it for myself. I mean, yeah, damn unhealthy, but what strikes me now is just how damn crazy the whole thing was... I mean, yeah, when I was younger I didn't get to eat a lot of "treat" foods, but hell, even back then I wasn't exactly starving (been on the heavy side as far as I could remember) and yet, here I'd be at times acting like some poor homeless person scrounging for a meal. Today, I don't do any garbage diving, although I'd hate to admit sometimes I'm tempted... it's funny, I'd never steal money from an office I worked at, but sometimes in break rooms when I bags of chips, crackers, cookies or something with no name on it... Yeah, I've taken food that wasn't mine, never anything that was obviously not mine, I mean, if it had a name on it, or was in a lunch bag I wouldn't touch but... Man, it's hitting me, just how crazy the whole thing is... And it gets worse.. sometimes I'll eat something in my car, like I dunno.. example popcorn or something. Then, maybe the next day, I'm rooting around for something and I find a piece on the floor, or even on the seat. What do I do? Throw it away like any normal person would? Well.... as long as it doesn't look dirty, usually I pop it into my mouth without thinking. And yeah, I've gotten a few bad tasting things because of that. Anyway, not sure why I'm saying all this.. just thought it might be the appropriate place to share it. I think a lot of us who are parents do something similar with kid-food
left overs. The amount of perfectly good food that kids waste drives me nuts - they take bigger servings than they can eat (despite Mom repeating until she is blue to take a small serving first and then have more if you want it) and then they leave it on their plate, or they decide they don't like something after taking a nano-bite, or they stuff their faces with bread and can't eat the meat and veg.....their lunches come back from school untouched, complete with the carefully prepared fresh bagel with the expensive sliced deli meat and cheese etc. It makes me really crazy. I totally hate to throw it all and I HAVE been known to eat it - its like a compulsion. However, that ends up counter productive, since I don't need the extra calories (I certainly don't need to eat my dinner and then half of theirs), and there is such a volume of it. I dunno how you stop the compulsion, but I know how you feel - I hate the idea of the perfectly yummy whatever being scraped off the plate almost untouched into the compost bucket, or opening up their lunch pail and throwing out sandwiches with a single bite out of them.
