Stool
My stool is getting harder. I've been taking 600 mg of docusate sodium
twice a day for at least ten years because some of the drugs I take harden the stool. I had slacked off the bran and fiber intake. Shortly after I returned to it in earnest the stool returned to normal. I've been on a diet of approximately 1200 calories a day since Nov 24. The 1200 figure was given to me by a professional dietician. I've lost about 7 pounds. I'll check my weight again next week if the weather permits. We don't have a scale. My wife says she that she thinks she's shed a few pounds, too. Breakfast is almost always 1/2 cup All-Bran with skim milk. Sometimes, I'll have oatmeal. Lunch is almost always 1) a sandwich with 3 ozs of meat, turkey or ham, 2) a TV dinner that's advertised as "lean" or "healthy", or 3) a bean or beef burrito with cheese. The beef is invariably cooked in stock; it's never ground beef. That is usually 300 calories. Occasionally, I splurge and get a 6" Italian or BMT sub from Subway. Those subs have oil and vinegar on them. Today, I'm having some frozen mixed vegetables. Dinner is from a place called Dinner's Ready, http://www.dinnersready.com/. I can't cook for health reasons and my wife doesn't have the time between work and helping me out. She also doesn't have the disposition. I eat 3/4 of a portion. I eat two apples a day, sometimes three and drink at least one Metamucil cocktail a day. I also drink about 5 or six glasses of fluid, tea, diet soda, or water. The dietician said that the soda and tea were just as good as plain water and better than fruit juice. The latter, he said, were empty calories. I very seldom add salt and use Sweet 'n Lo on my cereal and in my tea. Salad dressing and mayo are non-fat. There are exceptions to the above, but they're not that significant. Do you have any ideas about how I can soften the stool short of increasing the DOSS by 100 mg? If I do increase the stool, should I do so at night or in the morning? Thanks. |

Does not your doctor have the answer to your question? Does not he spent four years studying the human body? Does not he have colleague in the "**** department" he can call who could give him a quick answer? Does not he have medical books? Do doctors know more than giving pills?? |

The simplist stool softener is a couple of extra liters of water. If it works you'll know in a day or two and you can just increase your daily quota of water going forward. The extra water has to go somewhere and fairly little of it will be in the stool so expect to **** more. The next step in low impact would be psyilium husk to increase the quantity and absorbancy of the stool. It will take a few days to move through the system to have its impact. If you can find clear liquid fiber products that don't have added you-name-it (sugar or whatever) thos ewould work just as well. I don't think increases on this level matter if when you take them during the day. Timing matters to the harsher approaches. |
