Default Heading out of town

Early tomorrow morning I leave for a 10-day business trip to Dayton.
I'm not that keen on business travel to begin with -- just because I
don't like being away from home -- and this is not a great time of
year to be away.

I figure it will be interesting to see how well I can keep to a
healthy lifestyle. Fortunately, they've booked us in a Residence Inn,
which has a full kitchen in the units, so I can prepare some of my
food. I will probably eat at least some of my dinners in my room and
make lunches to bring to the office. I will be traveling with
colleagues, though, and don't want to be antisocial; I'll have to see
how comfortable I feel going my own way if everyone else wants to eat
out. (The hotel rate includes a breakfast bar of some sort; I'll see
whether I can get healthy food there or if I'd rather just buy
groceries for breakfasts as well.)

The web site for the hotel didn't indicate that it had an exercise
room, so I'll have to see. Otherwise I may make some visits to a
local gym. And I'm bringing my set of elastic tubes for some in-room
strength training, which I'll combine with some pushups and lunges. I
don't know whether lunchtime walks will be feasible or whether we'll
work through lunches.

I'm not worried about this; I sort of welcome the challenge.

And one good side to all this is I get to meet Beverly :-).

if i have to go out unplanned, i just order something small, like salad
(dressing on the side) and a roll, or soup. then, i might have a yogurt or a
cookie or apple/peanut butter-- just something-- at home later. i'm sure you're
aware of this method, but still-- most restaurants offer some healthy salad,
soup or vegetable dish...

if i were you, i would just eat the cornflakes or whatever they provide with an
apple, or have half a bagel with light cream cheese-- something like that,
where it's out of your "very healthy" realm but not necessarily bad for you.

When I was in Denver I enjoyed the breakfast buffet nearly every day.
There were two problems with this. The first is that it was really
expensive - something like $15 for breakfast in the hotel. The second
is that it is a lot of good food choices and I found myself eating at
least two breakfast's worth. For example, I really enjoyed the Omelotte
station where a chef would make me a real Denver omelotte (in Denver,
get it?) and I'd also have my oatmeal and some fruit. And maybe a small
bran muffin. And maybe a yogurt, too. Uh, you're getting my point I think.

The good part was that I'd pocket an apple and the muffin and
essentially eat them for lunch.

At one point I was in a hotel that didn't have omelottes OR oatmeal,
just greasy sausages and pancakes and cold cereal. I ended up eating
cut up fruit with granola and non-fat yogurt on it. It was pretty good
in a pinch.

The best part about staying in a hotel was all the cut up fresh fruit.
I love it when someone else does the labor. (But I noticed the apples
were waxy with labels still on them, so "labor" didn't appear to involve
washing the fruit.) :-(

The web site for the hotel didn't indicate that it had an exercise
room, so I'll have to see. Otherwise I may make some visits to a
local gym. And I'm bringing my set of elastic tubes for some in-room

I belong to the Y and they've got a "Y-Away" program where you bring
your Y card from your home Y and use it to get into the away one for
free. See if your gym has some connection in Dayton.

When people visit me (hint hint) I give them guest passes to my Y. I
get about three a year and rarely use them and they've accumulated over
time.

I'm not worried about this; I sort of welcome the challenge.

I gained a total of 8 pounds during my one week in Denver. During that
week I never particularly pigged out and I exercised nearly every day.
It's really a mystery to me how I managed to do that, but water was
certainly part of the equation. I came back with a sprained ankle
(sprained on my last day there). Seven weeks later I'm still up one
pound from where I was the day I left for Denver. (Those 7 weeks
included not only a sprained ankle recovery but also some serious
Thanksgiving multi-day feasting, so that's isn't so bad.)

We both know that this isn't a race - there's no time component to how
fast you have to get back to your preferred weight. So I guess part of
what I'm trying to say is that you may very well gain, but you'll lose
it again.

And one good side to all this is I get to meet Beverly :-).

LUCKY!

I've probably missed you already, but I hope you have a great trip, Chris!
Looking forward to hearing from you when you get back. I think it's great
that you and Beverly will get the chance to meet! I have had a great time
meeting friends from another newsboard I used to post to -- I hope you have
fun!

Well, you haven't exactly missed me :-). Here I am in Dayton, reading
the group through google on the work computer I'm using. I'm about to
go out to buy groceries, though.

Do you have free wireless? I love hotels that offer it

I am also a grocery person when I travel. If I'm driving to my destination
then I always bring fruit and yogurt and some myoplex lite shakes just to
have on hand for emergencies, otherwise I try to find some place close by
for stocking up.

I'll keep that in mind next summer on my way from Philly to Maine.

Did your hotel have a workout room? I'm looking forward to our meeting.
