I am starting my diet today (September 1st) and would like to
know if the chart below is somewhat correct.
1200-1800 calories per day = Lose weight
2100-2600 calories per day = Maintain weight
2800- +++ calories per day = Gain weight.

"This isn't right. This isn't even wrong." -- Wolfgang Pauli

Whether dieting is the way to lose weight is questionable at best.
But setting up calorie counts like that is so ludicrous it's not
even wrong. How many calories you burndepends on your agem, your
health, your activity level, your current weight, and other factors.
One person can gain on 2400 calories while another loses.

I have been on the simplest low-carb diet for the last year.
I have lost 40 pounds.
I don't count calories. I count carbs.
Here is my diet.

No potatoes
No rice
No pasta
No Tropical fruits
No fruit juices
1/2 the bread I used to eat.
Diet sodas
Splenda instead of sugar.
I avoid as much as possible, everything made from wheat.
I eat all the meat, chicken, turkey and fish I want.

It worked for me.

Well, that's nice. But most diets work if people follow them
properly. I've used a calorie-counting approach to lose 120 lbs. in
two years. I eat everything -- starches, fruit, veggies, meat, fish,
even desserts -- in moderation.

It worked for me :-).

It strikes me that counting only part of the food you eat is going
to cause problems (or at least not much success at weight loss) for
people who follow the letter but not the spirit of the rules. If
you eat a reasonably "balanced" diet anyway, it may work great (then
again, if you're in the habit of eating a reasonable diet, chances
are you don't have a big weight problem). If you eat ten pounds
of turkey daily because it's a "free" item on your diet, that won't
work so well.

Here is my diet.

....
I eat all the meat, chicken, turkey and fish I want.

This is particularly a problem for someone who is used to eating
whatever they want (and as a result has a big weight problem, and
may not have much idea about what a normal meal size is), and is
now even hungrier than ever because they are trying to lose weight.
"all I want" may be an unreasonable amount for a family of 5, much
less one person.

Indeed. Hellmann's Mayonnaise has a prominent "0 carbs" sticker. The
claim is correct, but that doesn't make mayonnaise a diet food.

(Cue the recording of Julia Child, speaking about low-fat and low-
carb substitutes: "Why not just make the damn thing properly, and
eat less of it?")

My sister and her husband got great results with the "Zone Diet",
which is low carb but emphasizes balanced eating and portion
control.
