I just wanted to post my thought. I lost 71 pounds thanks to his
teachings and I feel sad that I will never be able to thank him.

If you bought his book, you thanked his wallet.

Irregardless Dr Atkins has helped many people. Why should he not of
benefited from what he did? I for one don't like to spend a life time doing
work and not get paid for it. I dont see any other high profile person who
works with helping people lose weight to turn down any monetary benefits.
Even the YMCA takes your money.

I never said he shouldn't have nor that he didn't. Charlatans make

You guessed wrong.

Nah, you lost 71 lbs because you had the good sense to decide to do it and
the sticktoitiveness to get the job done. You should feel proud of what
you've done and make sure you don't devalue it by backsliding. Dr. Atkins?
He made respectable, and backed up by convincing argument, the sort of diet
that was touted as the way to lose weight when I was young, many decades
ago, IOW he enabled many of us to shake of the mesmerizing effect of the
endless drumbeat praising carbs and damning protein. But the strength of
mind to get in shape comes from within.

Irregardless is not a word. Regardless *is* a word. It means "without
regard to." That is the word you want. Sorry -- it's a very common
mistake, and it's just a pet peeve of mine.

Excellent points all! He helped a lot of people, and I am glad he got paid
for it.

Technically you lost the 71 pounds thanks to yourself, with his diet
principles as a guide. You thank him every time you tell someone how you
lost the weight, which is a great accomplishment BTW. Congratulations.

That's why we live in a capitalistic society. I'm just glad Dr.
Atkins lived long enough to be vindicated for his work. I'm sad we
didn't get to see how he aged -- I mean he was in great shape for a 71
yo, but from 70-80 is when you really see the effects of a lifetime of
habits, good or bad, it seems. That would have silenced the
naysayers! You can't argue with that! I find it amusing that people
will follow The South Beach Diet because it was developed by a
cardiologist -- I love telling them that Dr. Atkins was a cardiologist
as well. (So there!)

Man.. What motivates someone who is obviously not interested in a low
carb lifestyle to post on a newsgroup dedicated to it?

Are you just bored?

Why not get a hobby, or if you really enjoy usenet so much, post on a
newsgroup that talks about something you ARE interested in? I just
don't get it.

I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, I'm just curious about your
though process...
