Update: VirtualGuy for 6/06/2005
Start Date: Jan 31, 2005
Previous Progress: -34 lbs Week 15 (May 16): 0 lbs Week 16 (May 23): -5.0 lbs Week 17 (May 30): +6.0 lbs Week 18 (Jun 06): +3.0 lbs Progress to Date: -30.0 lbs Hi All! It's been about a month since I posted my last update. So, I figured it was time again. It's been an interesting 4 weeks. As you can see by the numbers, the weight loss hasn't been going as well as I had hoped. I was on vacation from May 21-28th. Overall, I didn't do poorly in terms of eating, but water weight is playing a big part of my gain. Drinking 4-5L of liquid daily was fluxuating my weight by up 10 lbs. Since I'm not in a regular exercise program, the water isn't getting expunged as quickly. So, it's sticking around. There is only so much water that one can remove via normal means. On the plus side, since Monday, my numbers are down 5 lbs. So, I should see a reduction at the next weigh in. On the other hand, I've got a business dinner on Saturday night and my Dad's birthday on Sunday. So, it's going to be trying to stay on target. Also, I've got a bit of dilemma on my hands. Some may look at it as an easy decision to make, but I'm not sure. irishcrm has decided that she wants to start going to a gym and wants me to come along. That in itself is good news. However, 5 years of past experience lead to think that this is going to be another Hindenberg waiting to happen. What makes this one a bit harder to swallow is the restrictive fitness club contract at the gym she is looking at. It's one that is about 5km away from our house. We have to pass by it daily, so it makes a reasonable choice. However, these guys want to lock us in for the year. No way of exiting the contract early. So, if she/we decide to stop going, it's a $1000 expense. I suppose that if I had more reassurances that this wasn't a passing fancy, I suppose I could be more inclined to agree to this. However, I'm still on the fence that this is what I want to do. I know 10,000% that this is what I *NEED* to do. However, if I don't have the motivation and committement to go 3x a week, there is no point in starting. I'm not sure that I've reached that point yet. If anyone has any advice that they can offer, it would be much appreciated. Cheers! I would rather be outdoors in nice weather and don't want to go out to the gym in cold weather. It might work if both of you encourage (or nag :-) each other to go. You realize the importance of starting exercise but I'm not sure joining the gym will work if you don't have the commitment and motivation. Is there some other type of exercise you and irishcrm could do together? It's good to see you haven't let the slight weight gain throw you off course. You're well aware that life often gets in the way of our plans. The most important thing is just keep going. You're not alone - I saw a slight gain over the past couple months due to a foot problem. Heck - therea re times when I only get to the gym 1 time a week. Or even one time a month. While, yes - its a waste of $$, its an incentive in the long run for me to go. I'm paying this, so I may as well just gone that one day. Usually once I go one day, I remember how good it feels and I want to go again the next day, and things progress positively. So - go. Spending the money only provides further incentive. But, by making excuses that you shouldn't join because you might not go 3 time a week every week for the next year is just dooming yourself to failure. Go, Join! If you hit a lull where you don't feel like going for a week, then don't go. Soon enough your conscience will get to you and you'll go just because you don't want to waste the money. |

If anyone has any advice that they can offer, it would be much appreciated. I've been thinking on this and discussed it with my DH since we were in a similar situation. I belong to a gym and he joined this winter for a variety of reasons though none were that he was motivated to get into better shape. In our case we pay quarterly, it's a small place with a local owner so he was able to drop his membership after one quarter. I still think there might be a way to negotiate a shorter term than one year though so I would definitely try that if I were you. There are some other couples at the gym who do work out together so it could be a positive way to spend some time together. Belonging to the gym does motivate me to go but not always. I joined a pool this winter and went once - OTOH I belong to a golf club and go at least 4x a week. It's more than money. The other big motivation when the workout itself isn't doing it for me is working with my trainer once a week. I've got enough different types of workouts to do that I don't get too bored and now that I'm not able to do any upper body powerlifting, my workouts tend to be more PT/rehab for my shoulder. BTW, I only go twice a week now (3x if I split my 2nd full body into upper and lower days), down from 4x a week. Since you already know you NEED to go, then I say GO. -- the volleyballchick |
