I hate to sound gross, but I have awful gas...really awful...and it's been
going on awhile.. I ate sugar alcohols about 4 or so hours ago... Is that what it is? -- ***Kerri*** 154/121/120 5'2" 6/10/03 |

I have found that if I don't eat too much (like a serving) candy with SA I don't have gas problems. However, others find that even a little bit (like less than a serving) causes them problems. It seems to be a YMMV kind of thing. You'll have to pay attention to see how a serving affects you -- if you don't like the result, don't eat SA candy with that version of SA. Some have maltitol and some have lactitol. Check and see if the both affect you with gas and/or cramps. Sorbitol is used sometimes, but I don't think I've seen that in candy. Oh, and whatever you don't, don't pigout on SA candy. Take it from me, I've eaten 34 peices at a sitting and the result was unbelieveable! Similar to being in a war zone.....more like having a war zone inside you.... |

If I were you....? Yeah, that would be it! Sounds like my experience after having an Atkins bar Atkins bars don't contain any sugar alcohols. This just goes to show you that people have gastric issues for any number of reasons and can quickly jump to the wrong conclusion. Sugar alcohols can definitely be a problem for some. I find using products with them in moderation to be fine. |

Some sugar free hard candies say splenda on the front, sorbitol on the nutrition panel, and isomalt in the ingredients list. I still have no idea exactly which ingredient was used (walmart's sugar free lemon drops, if I remember correctly). Oh, and whatever you don't, don't pigout on SA candy. I think I maxed out on about 15 pieces once. That was painful. revek |

Sugar Alcohols cause terrible gas?
(Harold Groot) writes: Hmmmm... I thought someone posted here that glycerine =was= a sugar alcohol (or maybe they posted that it was a very close chemical cousin). As I recall, the Atkins bars have about 10g of glycerine in them. Glycerine is another name for glycerol, and yes, it's a type of sugar alcohol. http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycerol http://www.lowcarb.org/glycerol.html |
