OT -- 13 year old fat girl kills herself over fake MySpace account

A story that is sad in many ways. Mean spirited teenage online
bullying and love of a fake MySpace account made a girl to kill
herself over her "relationship" with a fake MySpace account. What
would be merealy an annoyance to an adult, made her do something
stupid and irreversible.

Those of us who are parents of online children may think about how to
make them safer. My first two thoughts are to make sure that they
would talk to us about their problems, and second, make sure that they
do not take online stuff too seriously.

Obviously the biggest factor was her weight. Already 175lbs at 13, she felt
she was probably on the way to morbig obesity.

I do not know what was the biggest factor, but weight could be a big

It is very sad, and it points out a problem with the message board/
texting system. People tend to be anonymous which is synonymous with
unaccountability. I seriously doubt someone would say the things in
person that they say to a total stranger if they were face to face or
really knew the person. It is a haven for chicken shi_s in other
words. The beauty of it though is that you can just totally ignore
anyone who does this with the ignore button. I don't know about
myspace though. Perhaps people can't be ignored there.

Another problem of course is that you cannot hear the person.
Intonation means a lot. I see instances where people can't detect
sarcasm, insincerity and guile that they would be able to detect even
over a phone. It's not a perfect system that's for sure. Thirdly, you
can't use sight and hearing, two very important clues to determine if
you really should be talking to the person in the first place. Most
older folks understand this, but teenagers tend to believe much more
than they should to begin with. dkw

Maybe I misread the article, I thought that the woman instigated, and
the kids did the dirty work.

In California there is a law against "child annoyance." I don't know the
text of the law, but it might have been useful here.

If the story is accurate, I would think they would get a lawyer for a civil
suit. Attacking the offender's lawn and destroying their table was just
stupid.
