Default Food & Exercise -- 11/15/2007

Didn't go running this morning as it was pouring rain. Instead, for a
change of paste, I did some indoor stair climbing. Late in the
afternoon I joined my friend Mary Anne for a tasting of Beaujolais
Nouveau at a wine store (kind of disappointing -- they were only
pouring 3 wines), then visited her mom in the nursing home, then went
out for an early dinner at an Italian Bistro.

Food:

* 6:45 (home): oatmeal w/ peanut butter, flax seed, & golden raisins
* 12:00 (home): turkey breast burger on whole wheat bun w/ 3 slices f/
f cheese, dill pickle, & catsup
* 3:00 (home): small energy bar
* 5:00 (wine store): ~1 oz. wine; tiny bites of blue cheese, pate, and
tapenade
* 5:30 (nursing home): 1 small macaroon (MA's mom insisted I try
it :-) )
* 6:00 (restaurant): 1/2 order of mussels in a light marinara sauce
(we split it); 4-5 small pieces of bread (to mop up the yummy sauce --
this was maybe the equivalent of 1 1/2 normal bread slices); ~4 oz.
grilled salmon piccata (brought home another ~2 oz.); ~1 oz. roasted
potatoes; ~1 oz. steamed baby carrots (brought home another ~2 oz.); 2
glasses wine (Montepulciano d'Abruzza)

Exercise:

2:00: 50 times up and down the stairs to our basement (15 steps, a bit
steeper than average stairs)

Chris
You must have good balance. I would probably fall down the stairs
trying that.

Well, there are railings if needed :-). But seriously, I don't think
becoming fatigued is too likely to affect balance. If it did make one
more likely to fall, it would probably be due to muscle failure. I
found going down the steps a little more challenging in that regard
than going up, but no real problem. (But I am relatively fit and do a
lot of climbing; 50 times up and down stairs might be a bit hard on a
beginning exerciser. It might be good to start with fewer times.)

Chris
I wasn't thinking about becoming fatigued. I have a tendency to
stumble, and trip occasionally. I think it's due to scoliosis and
legs just slightly different lengths. I do use stairs, just am
extremely careful. I don't think for me it would be wise to climb
them 50 times unless I did it at a slow pace. Last week I was doing
a walk video that had a couple of dance type steps in it and I'm not
sure where I went wrong, but I ended up in the floor on my backside.
I didn't get hurt, just very surprised. :-)
Seriously, I do have to be careful, because even though I'm only 50 I
do have beginning stage of osteoporosis.

Then indeed you do need to be careful. I certainly wouldn't encourage
anyone to try any sort of exercise that makes them feel at risk of
injury. There are always plenty of other options.
