Weight loss is more than calorie-counting
Weight loss is more than calorie-counting
By: Glenn Barney, DC, ChiroSport Tuesday, January 25, 2005 12:06 PM PST Which diet works best? Should I exercise? How soon will I see results? In my 14 years of practice, these are just a sample of the questions or concerns I hear day after day. In a society that seems to be driven by reality shows it would only be appropriate to be realistic in answering these worries. Let's start at the cellular level. Under our skin are those pesky things called fat cells. We are destined to have the same amount of fat cells from the time we are born until the time we meet our maker. Unfortunately, they are distributed in different areas of our bodies and, unless we venture out to see our local plastic surgeon and have them permanently removed via liposuction or other surgical procedures, we're stuck with them. Some want you to believe you could burn the cells off, others tell you to starve yourself and the fat will magically dissolve. The real truth is, you need to put the fat cells to sleep or compress them. Don't eat or drink products with refined sugars, additives, or preservatives. By subtracting these from your daily routine, you are disallowing the fat cells from becoming activated, thus they remain flat rather than round. The end result? A less plump you. Make your muscles larger through strengthening exercises rather than increasing your cardiovascular endurance. By making your lean body mass stronger, it compresses the fat cells between the muscle and your skin, thus a more sexy and svelte you. No doubt eating right is important too. But in order to actually change your shape, you need to "clean the clutter out of your gutter." That takes a cellular detoxification. To detoxify, one would have to not consume wheat, dairy, citrus, sugar or red meat for at least eight weeks. During that time, you would utilize a regimented grouping of supplemental medial food to clear out the massive accumulation of toxins in the liver and gut. But don't worry - you can eat the five foods again, but your body will let you know how much and how often. Remember to drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day. The water intake will help increase your antioxidant level, boost your immune system and, most importantly, allow your acidic stomach to be less upset and therefore digest food more readily with out the side affect of gas. Your real goal is to "change your shape" and become a more healthy and happier you. Don't forget that muscle weighs more than fat. You shouldn't necessarily expect a drastically different weight, but a much stronger and more shapely you. |
