Default Vegetable mandatory on Induction?

Hi, I recently did a post and got some messages, about "mandatory
veggies" during Induction.

I have Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, printed Jan 2002.
In the chapter "Induction", I can't find anything about "mandatory
veggies".

It's stated "you can have" under salad vegetables but it doesnt seem
to have anything for "you must have" for veggies or any food group for
that matter.

Am I missing something?

Thanks for everyone who posted on my last message.

The "reasonability" of it all is that the vitamins and fibers that the
veggies supply are "helpful" AND suppossedly you are learning a NEW way of
eating.

If you take multi-vitamins, essential fatty acids, and fiber tablets then
you really don't need veggies.

Either way, it won't harm you to go a couple of weeks without veggies ...
unless you decide to extend your induction phase.

I didn't eat veggies during my induction.

Good luck to you!

Assuming you believe that modern medicine and the vitamin industry
have totally mastered nutrition and artificial vitamin supplements are
no different from eating fresh foods. COnsidering the many metabolic
diseases for which there is neither cure nor understanding of the
cause, I'd say that we are far off from a One-A-Day equaling eating
fresh nutrious meals. I ate vegetables and took a one a day and still
sufferedd from muscle cramps (which the book said I would--have since
added other recommended supplements and adding more veggies as much as
possible). One of the concepts atkins talks about is removing
manufactured foods and relying on natural foods sources (animal &
vegetable). I consider vitamins just another manufactured component
and substandard to getting the nutrients from vegetables. Until I can
expand what I eat sufficently the vitamins are a temporary must to
make up for what I am missing.

Thanks for the post

John and Digi,

I took fibers and vitamin tablets. I managed to prevent leg cramp by
taking in calcium tablets (well thats what I think anyway). Fiber was
in the form of psyllum husk.

Agree with this. The professional advice that I've received suggests that
it makes sense to take a multi-vitamin each day as insurance, but this does
not replace the need for a wide variety of foods. I started low carb 18
months ago and these days all I do is avoid flour, sugar, (including most
fruit), and starchy veg like potatoes and rice. The weight has stayed off,
I've cut my bp and cholesterol meds and my cardiologist told me to stop
coming for check-ups because I was wasting his time.

Honestly ... I think the Atkins diet makes people argumentative ... at least
from my experience on this board. It seems that one can make the most
reasonable, common sense statement in the world and it will be picked apart
by an Atkins devotee.

I say, once again, I do believe that you can go 14 days without eating
vegetable and feel no ill effects from it. The objective is to stay at or
below 20 grams of carbs for the first two weeks of the induction phase.

Best Regards,

John

P.S. nor have I heard of anyone having ill effects from taking multiple
vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and fiber tablets.

Good luck on your new way of eating and living!

I agree that vegetables are not essential.

You have my permission to skip the nasty vegetables. They just have carbs
anyway. I much prefer Low Carb Ice Cream, particularly Breyers.

I never read the book(s).

Oh sh*t!!!! Watch out....isn't that the phrase that is said the most on
ASDLC: "Go and read the book". The only excuse I will take from you,
Cubit, is that you can't afford it. (You know....that high-speed internet
access eats up the money every month so you can't afford a $6.95 paperback
book.)
