What is a calorie anyhow? Freak, I have noooooo clue. Seriously.

It's a unit of energy. Specifically, it's the amount of energy required
to raise the temperature of a very small amount of water (one cubic
centimeter?) one degree Celsius. Calorie counts are the measure of the
amount of energy you can get from specific foods.

I suggest that you learn to cook. It is not difficult and you could be very
helpful to your wife if you did.

Just to make life confusing, there are two different sort of calories.
The standard calorie (lower-case "c") is the amount of energy required
to raise one gram of water (which is one cubic centimeter) one degree
Celsius. But a Calorie (upper-case "c"), also known as a kilocalorie,
is the amount of energy required to raise one kilogram of water one
degree Celsius. It's that big-C Calorie that's used in discussion of
food. If you look at British nutritional information on food
packages, I believe they specifically say "kcal" rather than
"calories."
