The idea of how people got to eat some things is rather comical.
Imagine the first person ever to eat an egg... "See those chickens over
there? I notice every day that roundish things come out of their butts,
I wonder what they taste like!"...

Same thing with milk. They figured hey, I saw a baby cow sucking on
it's mom's udders, there must be FOOD in there!

Have you ever wondered about *cheese*? I mean, someday some guy left some
cream to rot for months, then came back and noticed it was rather solid with
blue spots on it, and he actually decided to check how it tasted...
Same with oysters, frogs, snails... Some people really had weird ideas... I
wonder how many experiments it took before our ancestors got the idea that
bananas would be tastier without the skin...

Patricia,

I agree one anecdotal report proves nothing but it is of some value.

Aside from cholesterol of 139, all the other readings were in normal
range.

Triglycerides=64
HDL C=54
LDL C=72
Chol/HELC ratio=2.6

There was a fair amount of discussion about the relative value of
natural full fat food and processed reduced fat food. Quite a bit
suggests that those who have experience eating the former find support
it and find it successfully promotes better health and optimum weight
while those that haven't done it think it's a worthless idea.

Best,
rjn

Anecdotal evidence is not worth while.

I notice you don't post anything about your
serum cholesterol or triglycerides.

I posted a number of messages to Google Groups a couple of years ago
recommending full fat (natural) food in place of reduced fat processed
food as better for health and weight level. The change from the later
to the former about five years ago resulted in weight loss with easy
maintenance. Though weight is lower than optimum now, that can be
attributed to structural weakness that doesn't allow much exercise.

Fat preference is seasonal; virgin coconut oil in summer, butter and
less frequently, EV olive oil, during the other seasons. 2-3 lbs.
would be an average monthly consumption.

Use often is generous. A half-liter of olive oil is planned to last
three days. A few tablespoons are poured on every serving of grain
bases meals. Three or four tablespoons of butter give a sauce-like fat
texture to a sandwich that's a meal.

About half the diet is whole, intact grain. Animal products are
enjoyed for a small portion. Cholesterol was 139. There were problems
with low blood sugar when younger but now 50; it was 79 after a 16
hour fast.

This is anecdotal evidence a macrobiotic-type grain-based diet is good
for health and weight.

Best,
rjn

These are really interesting questions... but in all actuality,
people were healthier when they were eating full-fat foods b/c they
did not eat the same quantity that we eat now... It is like people
think they can eat buckets of stuff these days, just because it is
reduced fat or something. Moderation is the best way to eat,
regardless of what it is we are eating, even if it is high fat/high
calorie...

I can't speak for the united states, but real butter can be found in the
dairy case here in Canada. Only ingredients being cream and salt.
There is also unsalted butter as well.

CM

Real butter without additives is available everywhere in the US as far as I
know.

Maybe they saw chicks hatch & figured that eggs contained little
McNuggets that they could eat without having to chase them first......

sounds like you need to have a "heart to heart" with your local
grocery store manager.
there are PLENTY of unadulterated brands of butter available.

Actually, I don't, I don't live in the USA All local supermarkets still
carry real food, though we have catched the craze about adding stuff (like
vitamins in milk) to the food. But I still have the option to buy the food
that doesn't advertise these - which is also the cheapest.
That was just my experience from visiting health conscious parts of the

USA,
like NYC or San Francisco. Since I was renting a flat, I could cook, but
finding real raw food there was amazingly hard.

??????????????????

How long ago were you in San Francisco? It must have been decades ago,
because there are scads of health food-type stores all over town. I've lived
here all of my life and if you didn't find any, you were't looking hard
enough.

I mean, it took us days to
find some regular butter like we use home - not margarine, light butter,
easy to spread butter, omega-3 enriched butter, spread (how do they make
this thing?), just plain old butter (which tastes good if possible). Same
with milk, unenriched whole milk was a rarity. Or you had to buy bio

stuff,
which costs a fortune.

OMG, maybe you were stuck in a 'burb somewhere, but not in SF itself. It's
easier to find things here than in any European city I've been to, and I've
been to a lot of them.

Actually, NYC was already a lot better than SF. At least, buying quality
greens and meat was very easy there. Of course, things might be twisted by
the fact that I expect my next door supermarket to carry everything I

need.
Maybe out of city supermarkets did carry what I needed.

When was this? Did you go to Farmers' Markets? Rainbow Grocery? Whole Foods?
The neighborhood Asian market? I live in Downtown San Francisco and I can
tell you that I can find all the excellent quality stuff I want, much more
so than any other part of the US (especially the Midwest and the South) and
Europe.
