It will probably work out okay. (fingers crossed)

Not everyone has access to more than one computer - so if the one you are installing a device onto does not work, how the heck are you supposed to contact the website? Sonny boy has been forewarned, said he will anticipate having loads of fun when he gets back to school (that's the computer the new drive will be installed on). As you mentioned in a thread above, the suggestion for problems was contacting their website "from a computer that would not boot" (I could have logged the laptop). I then checked the other manual and it gave different directions. Which is one reason that I have gotten possibly too gutsy and keep the computer open when I reboot these things - the hard drive propped on a book or clothing hanging from its cable while I make sure that things really work. I hate opening and closing the case only to find it still does not work right. I really did close my eyes and cross my fingers when I rebooted after the last set of instructions were followed. I was relieved and surprised. I was ready to pack the damn thing back in a box and get a smaller drive that would just hook to the existing cable. That or go the external USB route. I'd probably have spent hours debating over which set to follow ... and inevitably choose the wrong one for the first attempt. I will keep it all in mind though, and pass the information on to sonny boy AFTER he opens his gift. Joyce On Wed, 17 Dec 2003 09:02:14 -0800, Fred wrote: The drive came with a pci card that allows access to the larger drive. It came with TWO instruction booklets. One suggests installing the card, attaching the hard drive and its cables and reboot. NO! The other booklet was better but not much clearer but does suggest installing the card. Rebooting, allow xp to detect new hardware (the card), follow instructions for installing new driver for said card. Reboot and then add the hard disk to the card. This did work. I have a feeling I better print all this out for my son - he is a typical *guy* ... things instructions are not necessary. NO!!!! You needed to add the card, reboot and let XP detect new hardware. Install the card's drivers. Then add the hard drive to the setup. Perfect after that. So check out whatever first (G) Good luck On Tue, 16 Dec 2003 01:47:50 -0600, Joyce wrote: Oh boy, I think I don't want to be around when my son installs his. G I bought him a 250gig hard drive for Christmas - he is going to use it as an additional drive just for media. Sounds like he will have an interesting time getting it up and running. We might be running to you for tips. lol Maybe all that sweating over the installation worked off the excess you consumed earlier in the day. I also kinda ate too much other so-so but tasty foods. I also just put on nervously a lot more weight - well, computer weight. I just installed a 250gig hard drive (actually, the computer shell is still open at my feet!!!). The first time I got some odd message that just counted a lot of digits and said things were NOT RIGHT (not those exact words) and to reboot. Of course, rebooting did nothing other than repeat that message. Then I got a message about a missing FILE (I know it is a winxp file). Scary since it should have been on my initial, original, still in place (but maybe not intact C: drive). A few more reboots produced repeats (heading for the sugar and chocolate.... type events) of those various messages. Pulled out the new drive and prayed and rebooted. Ah, Winxp shows it lovely face. New hardware detected. And it works. I now have enough room for digital slides shows and movies up the wazu!!!! But the bottom line is I think you get this week - conceded in advance (G) This side of the mason-dixson line - Fred |
