increasing carbs now
Well, I figure it is time to increase carbs a bit. I have been around 25-30
for a while and yesterday I increased it 30 more. I ate a small Horizon blueberry yogurt in the a.m. It was so good. Anyway, I lost 2 pounds and am down to my 178 again. Go figure. I raised it another banana this morning, so I am up another 25 carbs (smaller banana). I also ate this before noon. I am going to hold this pattern (80 carbs +-) for a while and see how it goes and will only eat these carbs in the morning hours. I do need to lose 1 more pound to meet my Carol Ann goal for the month. I don't know if I will make it, but I will give it a shot. Sunday I have a 60 mile bicycle ride and hope to pull it off. Just wanted to mention my plans. I welcome comments. Curt -- Started low carb May '03 this time. 211/178/177 . . 6'2" 15% BF Age 38 Highest weight 250 5+ years ago |

If you are going by the carb count on the yogurt carton you may not be
getting as many carbs as you think. http://www.lowcarbluxury.com/yogurt.html In , curt stated | Well, I figure it is time to increase carbs a bit. What I typically do is eat fewer carbs during the week, then eat more before my bike rides. Last week, I "carb loaded" on Friday because I rode 19 miles Thursday and lifted weights for 1.5 hours Friday. I used peaches and the like to increase my carb count on Friday, then rode Saturday for 40 miles. I take in about 20g carbs per hour during the ride, and I had a post ride meal of pancakes (real ones) to try to recover the glycogen. I try to maintain a lower carb diet for the rest of the weekend, although last weekend, I did split a high carb piece of cheesecake with my girlfriend. -- Bob in CT Remove ".x" to reply |

Not sure. I have gotten a bit dizzy after a ride before and just felt a little off on others. I am getting down there in my weight and not sure if that has anything to do with it. Curt |

Did you have any side-effects from increasing by so much all at once? I'm
at the point where I need to move onto maintenance too, but I'm going to do it 10g/day for 7 day periods. I tried increasing 15g in one day but felt terribly bloated and tired. I had to decrease it back for a few days before I felt OK again. on Fri, 25 Jun 2004 16:24:12 GMT, "curt" wrote: Well, I figure it is time to increase carbs a bit. Sounds like you may want to increase at a slower rate. All I can say is listen to your body, I guess. Curt |

I rode a 100K last Saturday and ate plums, nectarines, cookies, half of a banana, and sport drinks during the ride. During the next to the last rest stop I realized I had no desire to eat anything at all. So, I didn't. After the ride, I just drove home (61 miles) without eating anything--but I did drink water. I think you should just listen to your body and not obsess over exactly how many carbs you "should" eat. Everybody's body is different. Pat in TX Hmm, I don't think listening to your body is the best advise all the time when you are riding for over 2-3 hours on a bicycle. One of the best things you can do after a ride is drink a sports drink or try and eat something. Sometimes you don't feel like eating or anything, but that can be a problem. I have read quite a bit about this after my 'bonk' after my 70+ ride of hills here in PA. I don't recommend that feeling to anyone, so just be careful you have enough in your tank. I didn't feel like eating, drinking or anything after that ride and I thought I was fine.....I was wrong. If I would have drank a sports drink or ate something I may have been fine. Curt |

Curt You are correct, Curt. There are often times when you 'extreme' athletes have to outwit your natural tendency to not drink enough or drink too much. Several hundred deaths a year could be prevented by drinking that sport drink, whether you want it or not. Bob |
