Default antidepressants

I've just been prescribed some very mild antidepressants as I've been going
through a rough few months and my housing situation is less than ideal (no
sound insulation between us and the neighbours upstairs means we hear
everything and constantly feel like she is listening in to our
conversations. I'm worried about the possibility of them making me gain
weight. Has anyone had any experience of amitriptyline? It's a very low dose
(10mg each evening). I don't want to start undoing all the effort I've made
during the last 10 months. My doctor was very pleased with the 64lb I've
lost. He checked my blood pressure which was a bit high - I'm not surprised
though - my heart was racing and I had been dreading discussing my problems.
He'll check it again when I go back in a month.

Personally, I would suspect that there is more danger from gaining without the
anti depressants - at least that is what happened to me. Hopefully someone else
can come back with a medical answer on this. Wish you all the best in working
your way through this stressful time.

I have been taking a higher dose of amitriptyline and it did not make me
gain any weight, have been on it for a few years now as it is part of the
medication for my high blood pressure.
I have only been on WW for 3 weeks but have lost 8.4 which I think is okay.
It may affect some people differently. You should get a paper with the
prescription that lists side affects.

I was on amitriptyline for a while for the fibro: dreadful stuff! I was
only on a low doze (25 mg per day, taken at night), but it turned me
into such a zombie I didn't move for a month! I did put weight on then,
for sure!

I also suffered dreadful side effects when I started on it (I had a week
off work trying to adjust!), and when it stopped working, they upped the
doze, and all the nast side effects came back for Round Two! I'd rather
have the pain, so I stopped taking it.

I had headaches and painful joints a few years ago and my dr. suggested
trying amitriptyline, it helped with the pain and allowed me a better sleep,
but I didn't gain weight on it. I was taking 20mg each night. Good luck
with it.

I thought the same Elaine - I've been struggling not to binge for a few
months, my weightloss slowed a lot but I've managed to avoid gaining
fortunately.

Hopefully someone else
can come back with a medical answer on this. Wish you all the best in

Thanks Betty,

Weightgain isn't listed as a side effect but severalpeople have told me that
it's something that antidepressants can do, it's good to know it;s not
automatic.

That's not good news, I was a bit sleepy this morning, but I often am after
a good nights sleep when I haven't been sleeping well.

Thanks Brenda,

It sounds like amitriptyline has a multitude of uses, hopefully it will work
for me too.

I was on antidepressants for 18 months, as well as anxiety meds. I did put weight
on, but I will not ever blame it on the meds. I and only I, was responsible for
what went into my mouth. I started ww in feb 2002, while still on the meds -
became more concious of what I was eating and guess what? The weight came off.
So, my opinion is that the gains are more due to the problem itself, not the form
of relief. Anyway ..... if you read the pamphlets included, most of the
antidepressants list weight gain AND weight loss as side effects. I take that as
an *either you will or you won't* - goes along with my wishy washy mindset. grin
I also take some of those side effects listed with a grain of salt. It only takes
a very few people to complain of what reaction they felt they had, and it then has
to be listed as a *possible* side effect. I guess it's right up there with
antibiotics ... possible side effect is diahrea ... yet not everyone has that
problem.

Again, the above is just MY opinion - I am not a medical professional by any
stretch of the imagination.
