Low carb and antidepressants?
My wife is doing a LC diet with very slow results. She is taking an
antidepressant (SSRI), which we have been told can reduce the weight loss. Anyone have experience with this? Is there any evidence that depression improves without meds on a LC diet (possibly due to reduced blood sugar swings)? Thanks ****************************** Got wood? Low carb and antidepressants?
Paul,
There is lots of medical evidence that SSRIs cause weight gain and that controlling blood sugar can improve mood. However, there is also a lot of other info--which the drug companies do not publicize--that suggest that people who attempt to go off SSRIs can suffer from serious withdrawal symptoms including disturbing sensations of electrical shock. This happened to a couple of my friends. So your wife may need to consult with a medical professional as to the best way to kick this legally sanctioned drug habit. -- Jenny - Low Carbing for 4 years. At goal for weight. Thanks ****************************** Got wood? Check out my exotic hardwood pennywhistles at fair prices...http://www.Busmanwhistles.com Hi Paul, I've been taking an SSRI for a couple of years. I started LC'ing about 5 months ago. At first my loss was quite dramatic, 27 lbs in 2 months. But since that time I have been in a plateau. When the weight loss first began to slow down, I continued on with the LC'ing, thinking it would just be a slow go, but it was a complete stand-still. I became discouraged and began "cheating". It's hard not to, when you go for months without any loss. Many recommended that I excercise and drink more water, which I didn't do. Even though I'm not "dieting" the LC way, I'm still not eating like I did before I started LC'ing. When I over eat, I eat things that are LC, and still stay away from potatoes and most processed foods. It has helped me to stay within 2 lbs of the lowest weight I'd achieved while _really_ low carbing. I will eventually go back to a strict LC diet, but I'll also do the excercise and drink more water, cuz I know I'm going to have to do it if I want to continue to lose weight. I am convinced I have this "plateau" problem because of the SSRI, and not because I'm close to my goal weight, because I'm far from it. Going off the SSRI is not an option at this point. The effects of withdrawal are horrible, and the effects of depression aren't good either. I wish your wife well in her persuit of good mental health and good physical health. Brigitte |

Weight gain or slowed weight loss when taking an SSRI depends on the
particular drug used; some have greater weight gain effects than others. Your wife should speak with her doctor and express her frustration to see if there is somthing that can be done to get her weight loss on track and remove any negative effects due to the meds or rule out any other problem. Thanks I take an SSRI (Zoloft) and have lost 36 lbs since last June. -- Saffire 205/169/125 - 5'2.5" Atkins since 6/14/03 Progress photo: http://photos.yahoo.com/saffire333 I concurr - I was on 225mg Effexor for years and as soon as I started the LC WOE, I found I was emotionally doing much better. After reading what others had experienced LC WOE and depression, I started cutting back on my meds (slowly). After 10 months, I found I could eliminate my Effexor completley! I've now been off the Effexor for a month and I feel great - maybe it's the self esteem from loosing 60 pounds, maybe it's something else. For the record, I also suffer from "intermittant explosive rage disorder", a form of psychosis. I take 15mg of Zyprexa for that and for the public's safety sake, I'm not going to mess with that. :-) Ken T2, Diet, Excercise & 1000mg Glucophage 300/240/175, LC'ing for 11 months Fom 400u humalog/day to ZERO, thanks to LC WOE! |

Low carb and antidepressants?
I'm taking Paxil CR I've lost 65 pounds since August. I'm stil losing
usually 2 pounds a week. I started Atkins last January but only lost 15 pounds from January to August but it wasn't the meds I was just on and off my diet the entire time. Got serious in August and had big losses the first couple of months then it slowed down. But I don't think it's the Paxil. |

Even if she consults such a professional, it would be good if she went off them even slower than said professional advises. Like you, I had some (online) friends who made the sad experience that even such professionals sometimes underestimate how slow or fast that progress can be. "Brigitte J." wrote in message ... Did you experience any withdrawal effects? Can you give more details on how you cut back on the meds? I'm also taking Effexor, but 150mg/day. Brigitte I was taking 2 pills, a 75 and a 150. For the first month I only took the 150. The next month I only took the 75. After that, I just stopped taking them. The only symptoms I had was a little restless sleeping but that went away after the third month.
