I considered GB, but knew I had to try losing the weight on my own. My

wife
has 2 friends that had the surgery, one died in the hospital after having
the lap ban procedure and the other had the GB and she has lost over 100
pounds, but still has quite a bit to go. My feeling is if your going to

be
forced to change the way you eat anyway, why not just do it on your own
without the surgery. I think most people can lose weight naturally if

they
change their eating habits.

Hope you find what works for you,

Paul

I recall there have been people here who've had the surgery, but I don't
know any names. I haven't had it. I'm thankful I was able to lose weight
without it. I wouldn't criticize anyone for trying it, though. I know it
isn't a decision you are making without a lot of thought beforehand.

I've heard some bad results from the rubber band surgery, so I wouldn't
suggest that one.

Default Has anyone here had gastric bypass surgery?

My SIL had it well over a year ago. She has had 2 surgeries since then to
repair hernias directly caused by the bypass surgery. She also has only
lost 35-40 pounds. She was hoping to lose 80 or so. She actually gained
weight (25)on purpose to get the surgery OK'd by her insurance company. So,
she really only lost 15 pounds in the long run.

For morbidly obese people, I think it can be an option to look into. For
those who need to lose less than 90 pounds or so, I've seen too many people
do it on their own by changing their eating habits and beginning an exercise
program. It is so drastic and invasive I would want to try anything and
everything else first.

My husband also has a cousin who had the surgery. She had a series of major
health issues starting by a very severe head injury when she was a young
adult that led to an eventual huge weight gain. After years on meds for
seizures and other problems, she finally got off of the meds and her
seizures stopped. Her bypass surgery was a great success...I believe she
has lost about 100 pounds with another 20 or so to go. She basically got
her life back, and is also planning some plastic surgery for the scars she
has on her face from the accident. She looks and feels great and says it was
the best thing she ever did. But, I believe her example to be in the
extreme due to all the other issues and health problems she had that
prevented her from taking a different route.

Thanks Babs, just what I needed a rude message to tell me what I already
knew. Proud of yourself?

Babs is proud of herself because she didn't have to resort to surgery.
Instead she controls her weight with exercise bulimia and prescription
stimulants.

She sounds like someone that is full of fear and very resentful.
I hope you can find the information you are looking for.

My friend 9who is not on this newsgroup) had the surgery and has been
successful. She's in her third year of keeping her weight down.
