Default Herbal teas

A while back I bought an assortment of Bigelow herbal teas at Sam's Club.
I'm not sure why, because I'm not a tea drinker, but these looked good so I
got them. Included in the assortment is Red Raspberry, Perfect Peach,
Peppermint, Fruit and Almond, Cranberry Apple, Cinnamon Spice, Cinnamon
Apple, Mint Medley, I Love Lemon, Cozy Chamomile, Orange and Spice, and
Sweet Dreams.

I don't know what the carb count is because there is no nutrition label, but
I'm thinking it's got to be pretty minimal. Like I said, I don't usually
drink tea, but I have found these to be a great way to satisfy my sweet
tooth, plus hot drinks are always so filling.

I have read to count herbal teas as 1 carb. Atkins says on one page
online that you can drink as much as you want or something close to
that phrase. I opt to be conservative and count them.

Reb, there are ingredients lists on the back of the individual envelopes of
Bigelow tea http://www.bigelowtea.com/ -- the lemon & orange teas may be
low-carb if they use the rinds for flavoring, but I expect that Cinnamon
flavors would have sugar added as it is not sweet by itself.

OTOH, if drinking a cup of hot herbal tea will ward off cravings for really
sweet stuff, I think it's a plus overall.

You wouldn't believe how much tea I have drank on the first week of
induction. At least 4 cups a day of decaf with just a tiny bit of splenda in
it to take the sharpness off. Now I am more a water drinker, but the tea
still helps alot.

It curbs those craving like you wouldn't believe. Now

Actually, the ones I have aren't. I have Lipton Cinnamon-Apple
(1g/serving, which I count as 1), and Bigelow Peach (0g/serving, which I
count as .5). I was really surprised how low carb they were as well. I
expected anything that tastes that good to have added sweetener/sugar, but
they don't appear to. I do add a little Splenda to mine, and it does make
quite a nice treat for me when I'm feeling like I want something sweet after
dinner. I especially like the Cinnamon-Apple - tastes kind of like the
apple cider you can buy in packets and add hot water to (but of course those
do have lots of sugar, so I figured I'd never be able to have that 'taste'
again). Most of the herbal teas are also very low in caffeine, or have none
at all.

Yeah, I add Splenda to mine, too. The ones with fruit flavors might be kind
of sweet on their own (which might mean they have a small amount of
carbohydrate), but it's not sweet enough (for my taste).

If you are okay with aspartame, Alpine makes sugar-free apple cider in
packets (man, was THAT good when I had bronchitis last year). I don't
remember the exact nutrition information, but I think it had no more than a
gram or two of carbs, if that. Hopefully eventually they'll switch to
Splenda. But aside from the aspartame thing, it's a great drink.

No, unfortunately I'm one of those who is really sensitive to aspartame.
When the soda companies switched to Nutrasweet, I found that I couldn't
drink diet soda anymore without experiencing horrible cravings (it felt
about like drinking too much coffee does - a combination of feeling jittery
and feeling really hungry).

I seem to tolerate aspartame a little better in foods (like in SF Jell-O)
than in beverages. Not sure why, maybe the concentration is less in foods.
Or maybe it just hits the bloodstream more slowly from food than from
drinks. Either way, I tend to avoid things made with aspartame as a result.
But I'll keep my eye out for the Alpine anyway, in case they do switch to
Splenda at some point. In the meantime, the Cinnamon-Apple tea is pretty
darned close (and pretty darned good too, g).
