Default An Added Incentive to De-Pork :-)

I'm working on taking off a few vacation pounds, but this morning I
just got a real added incentive to do so :-). My ex-trainer, Tom --
who was promoted to head of personal training for Life Time Fitness,
my gym chain, and transferred to Minneapolis -- called me to tell me
the company would like me to speak at their annual leadership
conference later this month. I will be speaking on the 26th, and will
have a 45-minute time slot, with a sort of interview format, to talk
about how my experience with Life Time has changed my life.

Seriously -- while of course I want to look like a good example -- I'm
extremely flattered to be invited and hoping I can say something that
will inspire people or make a difference. (And it's a free trip to see
Tom :-).)

How wonderful! It's quite a recognition of your achievement...

BTW, do you still compete? Or did your weight loss have a negative
impact in that area?

Thanks, Amy.

No, I'm no longer competing. I don't think it's exactly weight loss
related. I certainly lost absolute strength as I lost weight, but
probably stayed as strong relative to bodyweight -- and in competition
there are weight classes. It did bother me some, though, to gradually
be able to lift less and less :-). The days of 200 lb. bench press
will never return -- sigh...

Probably the main factor in my stopping competing was the fact that
both of my trainers moved on. Tom got promoted and moved away, and
Ahmed just decided he was tired of coaching. And I didn't enjoy
competing for my own sake -- I guess I'm just not competitive in that
way and it made me awfully nervous. So between this stuff and feeling
bad about not being as strong, I just lacked the incentive to keep up
with it on my own. (I do have some nice medals and trophies as
souvenirs, though :-).)

My focus now is much more on overall fitness. I'm doing more running
than I did when I was competing in lifting -- and in general doing
more cardio is incompatible with trying to be as strong as possible.
And I do a lot of yoga, mostly to improve my flexibility, which has
never been good and which I think becomes more important as one gets
older.

Anyway, I'm happy with where I am now.

As well you should be--your achievements are a great inspiration to many
of us. I'm not trying to gush or flatter--but I know that when I see you
posting everyday--even after all you've been through of late--it helps
me to set *my* bar a little higher.

Thanks, Chris.

I think that is wonderful, Chris! What fun for you--and inspiration for
others, I am sure. Enjoy!

I love seeing people succeed! It is so motivating to know that other
people have been in your shoes and made changes to their life.

Enjoy your success.

That's so cool! And definitely an incentive to look your best!

Congrats!

Congratulations!

You're an excellent example of what can be accomplished with diet and
exercise.
