Atkins' Diet and Anti-Depressants
Hi everyone,
My name is Brigitte and I'm new to this group and new to the Atkins' diet. I'm wondering if my current weight problem is from the use of an anti depressant I've been taking for the last year. I started the diet two weeks ago and right off the bat lost 5 lbs in the first few days. I was so happy and expected that I would continue to lose at that rate, for awhile anyway. By the beginning of the second week, after following the diet as I did the first week, I'm beginning to see weight gains when I weigh every morning. I know I'm not suppose to weigh every day, but is this why I shouldn't weigh every day, because of the occassional gains? Waking up the last 3 mornings and seeing I'd gained a pound each day is making me feel defeated. I'm now wondering if the Effexor XR that I have been taking for my depression is the culprit. Anyone here have any knowledge or advice? I'm going to stop weighing every day and see if that helps, even if only psychologically. I don't want to give up, so I'll keep going with the diet and hope that this problem is just some sort of plateau, although unlikely at such an early point since I'm more than 75 lbs over weight. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brigitte |

Hi,
On 30-Sep-2003, "Brigitte J." wrote: My name is Brigitte and I'm new to this group and new to the Atkins' diet. Snip for brevity Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. * First thing that comes to mind is PMS water weight gain. What point in your cycle are you? * Second thing: high sodium foods can cause water retention. * Third thing: have you been gaining weight quickly ever since you began taking Effexor? If not there's no good reason to suspect it now. * Fourth thing: keep in mind that the depression can and will grab onto anything as a focus. (I know from personal experience here.) Try giving it fewer focal points by weighing less often. * Fifth thing: might as well learn this one up front - calories still count. Keep some sort of track of them to ensure you aren't going too high or too low. * Sixth thing: exercise is a Good Thing™. :-) Welcome to the group. Take care, Carmen |

I'm now wondering if the Effexor XR that I have been taking for my depression is the culprit. Anyone here have any knowledge or advice? I'm I looked it up at http://www.onhealth.com. Weight gain is not one of the common side-effects, so it's probably not the problem. It could be PMS. If you aren't getting enough fiber, it could just be an accumulation of waste that needs to be expelled. Tell us what you are normally eating each day and we might be able to give you some pointers. It's easy, especially when first starting this WOE (Way of Eating), to misinterpret what you can eat at various times or to know what might affect the way your body responds to various foods and drinks. -- Saffire 205/186/125 Atkins since 6/14/03 Progress photo: http://photos.yahoo.com/saffire333 |
