LDL Cholesterol
My LDL Cholesterol is 430 and I'm 61 years old. My doctor is mailing me meds
for it. She said to lower my carobs. She didn't say anything about weight, celeries, fats, etc. So I really don't want to die and I'm a good candate for a heart attack or a stroke. I got the info tonight and I'm even afraid to eat. So I guess I should change my diet big time like eat fresh fruits and veggies for a month and nothing else. I don't think much of doctors when it comes to things like this but I do know I can't go to taco bell or eat Sundays anymore. No bread, pasta, rice, or potatoes. Any advice would be appreciated. Richard Don't go overboard, or you'll drive yourself back to bad behaviors. Walk before you run. Obviously, take care of any 'danger' situations (ie. fast food every day? No.) But then, start small and work your way up. Have a salad before you have a steak. Low-fat dressing if ANY (I'm fascinated with finding salads I can bear to eat without any dressing). Read the back of every damn box you pick up, ever. Seriously. Anybody who isn't examining the nutritional information for every packaged consumable they look at in the store is sending the big message that they just don't care. (I caught my father eating 'all natural' granola that had honey added. Lots of carbs. He just never looked on the back, assuming it was fine because it said natural.) Stop eating white bread. You want whole grain, NOT wheat. Some "wheat" breads are just as bad. Substitute whole grain wherever you can. Noodles, in particular, are a big source of carbs. Try to make 75+% of your meal from "sides." Veggies should be at least half your plate. Mix it up and keep it interesting for yourself. But most importantly of all, just make small changes, observe the results, and be honest with yourself about whether it was a good change or a bad change. |

Richard you will need meds for this high a cholesterol. Also see the American heart association web site for more information. You might consider the DASH diet as well. |

Richard Richard, BEFORE you take these medicaments, try the low-carb diet first and have the LDL Cholesterol tested after. Who knows, its level may as well be OK afterwards. Medicaments may help you with the cholesterol, but may have side-effects which means you will damage other organs which does not put you in a much better situation. Be aware of anything produced in a lab that you'll put in your body. Don't play too much with nature because after all, she is the "big boss". |

Of course, he should consult his doctor above all else about this. If she says meds + diet at the same time, I either accept her opinion or consult another licensed medical professional. |

Consult a doctor, certainly. Doing everything he tells me to do without doing my own research, no. I'm saying that to the OP, not you, James. |

Richard Gosh what a shock! How high can the LDL Cholesterol go anyway? Drs usually go ballistic when it gets over 100 and notify next of kin unless you accept medication. Its kinda like the prostate PSA score and how men go nuts when it goes over 7 and then you read about people with a score of 14,000 who of course have a real dose of prostate cancer. Are you positive your LDL is 430? Cut out the fat Richard and eat celery and then get tested again. Like for 2 or 3 days before you are tested do not eat much especially fat and see what the score is. Its no joke really. All that LDL lines your arteries with crud and then they get hard and all sorts of bad things happen. |

Richard Richard, How is your weight?I won't tell you to ignore your DR.but I think these Statin drugs are seriously dangerous. Here's what helped me and you can do it while your on the medication.Go to you grocery store and buy--White Grape Juice,Cranberry Juice, and Apple Juice.Mix about half of each container(this should give you about 1 gal.Next add 1 1/2 cups of Apple Cider Vinegar and shake it up real good.Drink 1or 2 8 oz. glasses a day and see what happens.I told my sister what I was doing, she tried it and got hers down below 200.Good Luck.
