Default A poll for successful losers - how many calories do you maintain with?

"Doug Lerner" wrote in message
...
This is a poll (suggested by another person) aimed at successful weight
losers who have lost a LOT of weight (gone from obese to normal weight)

and
who have maintained that weight loss for a reasonable amount of time.

1. What plan did you follow?

I was inspired by Dr. Herman Taller's diet from 1961. I kept his
macronutrient ratios, substituted any fat for his saflower oil, rejected his
love for potatoes, and rejected his belief that calories would just take
care of themselves. I counted calories with careful measurement where
possible.

2. How many calories per day are you maintaining your weight on?

2.7 months at 1845 calories per day (no activity deductions, Doug)

3. What is your age, sex, height and before and after weights?

-in 2001 I was 320 pounds
I'm now 152.
5' 8" male, 49 years old

4. Any additional comments about what made you successful.

1. low carb high fat reduced appetite
2. Frequent tiny snack-like meals with no large regular meals made it
possible to be calorie restricted without being hungry.
3. Exercise made no apparent difference.
4. Occasional extreme low calorie days didn't stop weightloss progress.
IMHO: "Starvation Mode" is a harmful myth.
5. Constant tracking of food and weight in Fitday allowed me to manage my
diet even when crazy weight fluctuations might have broken my spirit of
determination.

I'll summarize the results for everybody!

Thanks!

Cubit,

"Exercise made no apparent difference." Does that mean that it didn't
matter whether or not you exercised, just if you stuck within your
caloric limit, you still lost weight?

That's impressive. I am curious, from where do you get so much
protein.

I have to use a bar and a shake. I also have caloric room for alcohol
in the evening. Apparently these three items are not very popular in
this group. You can search the group for "Where can I find 250mg of
calcium daily" if you're curious.

The original goal was 45/45/10 but I found that nearly impossible to
reach while sharing dinner with my family. I compromised with the less
aggressive balance (40/40/20).

6:30am – Multi-grain English muffin w/natural peanut butter, black
coffee (1) and a multi-vitamin

9:30am - Tri-O-Plex protein bar

10:30am - Banana

12:00am - Protein shake (Myoplex)

1:00pm - Spinach wrap sandwich (roast beef, turkey, tuna salad,
chicken salad or salami cold cuts with veggies) and a multi-vitamin

3:00pm - Cottage cheese

5:00pm - Martinis (2)

6:00pm - Varies:
Beef, poultry and seafood choices
Vegetable sides or salad
Whole wheat pastas or whole grain rice choices

2126 Calories
13.5% Fat
43.4% Carbs (net)
43.1% Protein

Eat less while losing, same for the first 10 months on maintenance,
low carb afterwards

2. How many calories per day are you maintaining your weight on?

2400-2500

How much do you exercise?

If I run your numbers in the BMR formula I use I calculate you need to
burn between 600-700 calories to maintain 176. Dropping the exercise to
a more reasonable 300 calories puts you maintaining your original weight
(223). What am I missing here?

Not everyone here has a problem with protein bars and shakes, or alcohol for
that matter. Some of the most successful people in this group regularly use
all 3. I use whey or soy powder in my cereal/oatmeal each morning and in a
pinch I'll eat a half a protein bar.

I don't drink alcohol anymore for medical reason or else I'd be saving some
points for it.

I am not sure what formula you used here, but 2400 calories for 176
lbs of weight is 13.64 calories per lb, which is a very reasonable
number for a male.

i

Men: BMR = 66 + (6.23 x pounds) + (12.7 x inches) - (6.8 x age)
Women: BMR = 655 + (4.35 x pounds) + (4.7 x inches) - (4.7 x age)

I guess we use different formulas. If you're maintaining then your
formula works fine. Can't argue success.

I use protein powder in my oatmeal. It's a great way to get extra protein.
I don't use the bars too often but always have one in my bike bag in case I
need something while out on the bike. I prefer bananas but they get a
little messy if you forget to take it out of the bagg
