Default Day 29 of 100 days -- still 17 pounds gone

1-29-07
265/248/2000 Day 29 of 100 days, 17 pounds gone

Got on the scale just now and still was at 248, the indicator showing
that I was pretty much right in the mid-range, so about 248.5. Good!

It's a Monday and diets go better on Mondays for me. Went out to
dinner last night (Sunday) with relatives and had about 1200 calories
then. A heck of a lot less than I was having at such dinners several
months ago. About 1900 calories for the whole Sunday. Even at this
calorie intake, I'd expect to lose about 2.4 pounds a week, 10.5
pounds a month, and 35 pounds in a 100 day period. This is a bit
slower than I want, but certainly a heck of a lot better than what I
was doing 6 months ago. And of course more than a day at a time, the
important measure is what one eats week by week, month by month, year
by year.

In terms of weight loss advice, one common bit of advice given is for
one to shave 500 calories off what it takes to maintain a given
weight, but this is troublesome advice to me. It presumes, I think,
that one consumes on an ongoing basis the number of calories to
maintain one's weight. However, the number of calories a lot of people
consume varies hugely from day to day. And so, asking people (with
wildly fluctuating daily caloric intakes) to maintain 500 calories
less than their body needs to maintain weight will not only will lead
to a loss of (only) a pound a week (hardly enough for many of us to
maintain motivation), but it also presumes that people will be able to
maintain the kinds of regular eating habits that they have not before
demonstrated. Seems to me to be a recipe for failure.

So far this morning I've had 350 calories, including 50 calories of
V-8 juice, and I'm ready to head off to work. I hope to walk up my
little hill tonight, in spite of the chill in the air. (It's below
freezing here at 7:15 a.m.)

I hope everyone has a great week ahead!

Yours truly,

Caleb
