New AGAIN.... hopefully this will work
Hello I'm Nessa 44 quasi-wife to brian (bri) who is 33 and my fiance (who
has now moved in with me) and his lovely daughter Girl Child (age 11). Both bri and i need to lose well over 100 pounds each. girl child is a bit chunky as well and knows it. Since we JUST moved in recently (beginning of April) and I suffer from ADHD and depression (although I am not medicated for either) my therapist wants us to NOT change our horrible terrible eating habits for at least 3 months so we can aclimate to living together. He's never lived on his own (he's always been with his folks or his old girlfriend's parents when he was with her) and I've been pretty much on my own for about 12 years. Today our water cooler is being delivered so I'm home waiting for it. anyway I know i'm getting ready and I think we are going to do a MODIFIED South Beach... it's not atkins are we still welcome here? I know eventually we will have to UNMODIFY and follow stricktly but the way we eat now... even just cutting out junk food and sugar will help. A lot. so... is it ok for those of us who are just gonna try to eat better (i.e. reduce our sugar and junk) to hang out with you very cool people? |

Nessa --
This is not an Atkins newsgroup, it's about low-carb. Also, anyone can post here, so you should feel welcome. Also be aware that some people won't be nice. Why not follow SB as it is written? Or, just cut out sweets, flour, and starchy foods. Reading the SB book or the Aktins website will provide guidance was to what foods to avoid, if you need it. Many find they can just cut the junk and the excessive carbs and lose just fine (don't forget exercise -- i fyou are 100 lbs overweight, then simple walking everyday can be very effective). IMO, doing a modified "plan" isn't as good since if things don't work for you people might get the idea that the plan doesn't work. If you just roll your own, and it works, you're good to go. If it doesn't, you can do SB as it is written, or do Atkins as it is written, or do one of the several other version of LC plans, as they are written. Most of them have been time tested, so it best to either do them or not. You can still get the gist of them and roll your own...and just tell people that you're doing "low carb." Good luck. Of course you're welcome to join.
Be careful about "modifications". These plans have been developed by working with thousands of patients. They are the way they are for a reason. Most of us fatties don't do well when we make it up as we go. I do my own low-carb plan, but it's very strict. Once I hit 1400 calories and 20 carbs(minus fiber) for a day, I'm done eating. Happy losing and check in often. This group is great for information, a few laughs, or if you need a good butt-kicking. P.S. - Don't forget the exercise. -- Vic 258/213/180 Since 3/24/04 May Challenge - 20 lbs. So far - 9 lbs. http://photos.yahoo.com/vicsprogress "Nessa" wrote in message ganews.com... : Hello I'm Nessa 44 quasi-wife to brian (bri) who is 33 and my fiance (who : has now moved in with me) and his lovely daughter Girl Child (age 11). Well let me tell you we both ingest well over 3.000 cals per day now i'm
sure. modifications will mean more fresh fruits for girl child than called for and possibly skipping the very strict first stage. as for exercise... here's the excuse on that.. bri was born with TWO club feet and one twisted leg. He wears a tight size 14 wide shoe. he's had surgury and has pins and rods and staples holding his right ankle together. he also has a bum knee. I fell 3 years ago this month and DESTROYED my ankle. I've got a six inch plate and six sheet metal screws holding my ankle together. I can predict the weather. we know we need more exericise but until we get some of this weight off.... almost anything is hard. right now i'm so tired of not being able to tie my own damn shoes.... bri races cars hopefully he will be motivited to be smaller so he can more easily climb in the windows.... Yes, it is okay. Also, if you cut out junk etc, you may find that your hyperactivity issues could become a little better. I didn't say i was hyperactive. I said I had ADHD.... BIG HUGE difference. actually sugar makes me sleepy as do carbs which is one of the reasons I want to cut them out. |

Welcome! Sure, you can eat whatever you want, there are no rules, only
consequences. A "modified" South Beach diet may return some results, or it may not. But it is your choice. I hate it when I'm at a barbecue and a friend points to a rich potato salad and asks "Can you eat that?" As if I'm under house arrest by the diet police or something. "Sure I can eat it, I just don't want to." So don't force yourself into anything you're not ready for. If you do, you'll be telling yourself "I can't eat that" instead of "I don't want to eat that." It's easier to resist temptation when you're not all that tempted. Good luck, and welcome again! |

I personally find the first stage makes the diet easier. You rapidly break addicitions, switch your biochemistry over, lose your cravings, appetite supression kicks in and you start to feel better. You have a few days of feeling crappy and then it's over with. That's why most plans start with a strict stage. That being said, cutting out sugar and junk food is certainly not going to hurt, even if that's all you do. But if you find it difficult to stick to, rtaher than quitting, go back and try the strict phase of whatever plan you're doing. we know we need more exericise but until we get some of this weight off.... almost anything is hard. right now i'm so tired of not being able to tie my own damn shoes.... This is *why* you should exercise. I *hated* the idea of doing anything even vaguely aerobic, cause it's so damned exhausting. About the only thing I did of that sort when I began was some swimming, and I was embarassed at how little I could do even that - even with the water supporting my weight, I got out of breath by the end of a half lap. But aerobic exercise is not the only type of exercise. There's also both flexibility type stuff (like yoga or Tai Chi) and strength-training stuff (free weights or machines). I started with the generic goal of "just move my body somehow 3 times a week." After a few months of futzing around with various things, I started strength-training with my only cardio being 10 minutes warm-up on the treadmill before starting my main workout and continued swimming on the off days. The strength training caused me to improve on both the treadmill and swimming pretty rapidly so they are enjoyable as opposed to the torture I expected. More importantly, it's made life easier... I have more energy for household and yard chores. Things that felt bad before feel OK now, things that felt OK before feel downright *good* now. It's made a huge difference. I'm not what anyone would call strong or healthy yet, but I feel so much better than just a few months ago. Don't think you can't exercise, instead look at what you *can* do and do that. It *will* make you feel better and you'll be able to do more as time goes on. Just go slow, take it easy. It's easy to get overmotivated, work your butt off, and then be too sore to continue and get discouraged. My general rule of thumb is I expect to be sore somewhere between 2 and 24 hours... if it's more than that, I did too much and cut back. But move your body *somehow* - it will make you feel better. -- As you accelerate your food, it takes exponentially more and more energy to increase its velocity, until you hit a limit at C. This energy has to come from somewhere; in this case, from the food's nutritional value. Thus, the faster the food is, the worse it gets. -- Mark Hughes, comprehending the taste of fast food |

Just make sure you read the books whatever you do! I haven't read the SB book,
but reading the Atkin's book for the first time was very good. It's like getting a great supportive pep talk - give you an important, inspirational spurr to start. I hope it all goes well for you and your family.
