Well, I heard on the news that overall, people just weren't buying
things like Twinkies as much, due to high calories and worthless
nutrition more than due to low carb.

I have now found the news item. They are continuing to operate, while

in
chapter 11. Thanks for posting this. I had missed it in the news.

It symbolizes a change. While the strict low carbs diets practiced in

this
group are a fad, there may be a permanent reduction in the overall
population's carb eating.

The highly refined white bread WB makes is their special niche. IMHO

they
should make the same product, but scale down production to the new

level.
If they change to some other kind of bread, "Wonder Bread" won't mean
anything.

I used to always buy Wonder Bread "Big" loaves.

Wonder Bread filed for bankruptcy today.
That really makes me happy.

Because about a year ago, I remember someone from management there
saying that they would NEVER modify their high-carb breads.

Wow, talk about the end of an era! Wonderbread has been around ever since I can
remember, and I can remember back to the late 50s. I remember there was a
wonderbread factory or distribution center near where my father worked. Of
course, Mom rarely ever BOUGHT Wonderbread for us, probably because it was more
expensive, but it was really the "cake" of breads (with very little nutritional
value) and we always WANTED her to buy it for us.

Actually, it's the company that owns Wonder Bread (and Twinkies), and
they filed for bankruptcy protection while they reorganize. This
doesn't mean they are going out of business or shutting their doors.
It means they are in serious financial trouble, and need their
creditors off their back while they fire people and get their
financial house in order.

Other reports indicate that it wasn't so much the low-carb revolution
that has hurt them as it was their refusal to change with the times
and innovate.

Really? All those people who lost their jobs, investments, retirements?
Their product may suck but your happiness is shallow.

This makes sense to me. I live in a large metropolitan area, and you can't
drive a mile without seeing a "real" bread store or bakery. I go into the
grocery store, and the more interesting grain breads take up most of the aisle.
I visit my parents, who live in a small town, and while there's more white
bread sold there than here, it's higher quality than Wonder Bread. Wonder
Bread, Twinkies, and the like seem like foods from the 1950s and 1960s, while
most people have moved on to wanting texture and flavor -- other than sugar --
in their bakery products.

As a low-carber, I'm not going to eat ITT's products. Then again, I never
bought a loaf of Wonder Bread or a Twinkie except for maybe during my sophomore
year in college, when I had to make my own meals for the first time in my life.
They never made anything I considered of high enough quality to buy. I mean,
hello? Most store brands taste better.
