Morbid Obesity
Alice Faber wrote in message ...
A few years ago, Sports Illustrated had a cover story about health problems of retired NFL players. Mostly these were players who had played before the era of 300+ pound linemen, but horrible degenerative arthritis was widespread; Sad. But it isn't connected to obesity. the cover photo was of Johnny Unitas' hand, which was so affected by arthritis that he could no longer grip a coffee cup let alone a football. Watching Joe Namath walk is quite sobering as well. I agree that these men will become spectacularly unhealthy if they maintain this weight after they retire from professional sports. I'm not sure that being that weight is healthy even with a high muscle-to-fat ratio! However, they are certainly not "morbidly obese" by the usual medical criteria, despite the fact that their scale weight is more than 100 pounds above the suggested norm. T. |
