Default Psyllium fiber question

Happy Sunday, all:

Quick question. Per my doctor's advice (she is VERY pro-Atkins, has done
quite a bit of research on this way of eating, and lost quite a bit of
weight on it herself!), I am taking 1 tsp of Konsyl (psyllium husks) every
other day. At the same time, I'm just off induction about a week ago, gently
adding in carbs in an effort to work up to my optimum carb level. My
question: Should I deduct the 5 gr of dietary fiber (4 gr soluble fiber)
from my total carbs each day I take the psyllium?

Yes, it tastes terrible. Yes, I know some veggies can have the same effect.
I choose to follow doctor's orders for now.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't even count psyllium, and never have.

Why deal with that? Buy psyllium in capsule form. That's how I get

Fiber is fiber, as long as you get it, what the matter? Broccoli, spinach,
caulifower, and others are all things you can add more of in your OWL phase,
and you don't need to count the fiber in these in your net carbs.

Default Psyllium fiber question

I *knew* someone was going to say "just eat your veggies"... but again, this
is my doctor's advice and at this time I choose to follow her advise. FYI,
her statement was that of the research she's done on Atkins WOE, and of her
experience with her own patients, the only recurring medical problem she has
seen or read of is that Atkins folks have a higher tendency to develop
polyps, and her recommendation is for the psyllium husks every other day as
a preventive measure. I'm 52. She might not be making this recommendation
for 20 year olds...

I do like the suggestion of the capsule form of psyllium! I'll switch over
once I get through this $15 container... can't just throw it away,
unfortunately.

No!

The deduction of fiber is per food item only. The "net carbs"
subtraction allows you to count only how much of the carbs in a given
item is the type that is going to affect your system. Adding more fiber
to a food does not *negate* the other carbs.

You still should eat your veggies....FYI, I eat my veggies and take psyllium
everyday. I have diverticulosis. My comment about the veggies is based on
your stated (and others, mind you) dislike of the taste of psyllium. Aside
from fiber, there are other reasons to eat veggies.

BTW, I wasn't suggesting that you not follow her advice....but I'd bet if
you pressed her, she'd have to admit that there's nothing special about
psyllium. It is better to make sure you understand the reasons behind her
suggestions...that way, you have more options for see about your health.

As for your bulk stuff, have to tried mixing it with other stuff? For
example, mix it with protein powder and make a shake, mix with with protein
powder, sour cream, splenda, for something like pudding. Sprinkle it on
salad, etc. The possibilities are endless.

I can see where that could be read either way - but what I think what she's
asking is can she not add the fiber carbs towards her daily total (for
example, not count 25g for the day if she's eaten 20g carbs and has also
taken the fiber), rather than can she subtract it from other carbs she's
eaten during the day. And the answer to that would be yes, she doesn't have
to count the fiber grams towards her daily total.

Hmm... You add five grams of fiber carbs in, but subtract them again because
they're, well, fiber. Doesn't sound like an issue to me.

Your doctor advised you to take psyllium instead of eating veggies, not in
addition to? Am I reading this correctly?

Absolutely not. She advised me to follow the Atkins diet (which, obviously,
includes veggies) PLUS use the psyllium husks every other day. In addition
to, not instead of

Default Psyllium fiber question

Ahhhhhhhhh.... now it makes sense!!! (DUH me!) The container states:

Calories (Available) 3
Carbohydrates (Available) .05g
Dietary Fiber 5g
Soluble Fiber 4g

I was thinking it was .05 g carbs MINUS the 5g fiber - which would minus me
4.5 carbs. But I was missing the "available" word -- apparently they've
already minus'd the fiber before the carb count. Is that correct? If so,
like you say, fiber carbs in, fiber carbs out!

BTW - what's the difference between dietary fiber and soluble fiber? And how
is each deducted from total carbs?

Thanks for all this help!!
