I'm a little confused by this statement. Have your goals changed since you
started this thread? In the original post you were discouraged because your
progress was slow, you wanted to be able to wear those size 14 technical
pants. Being fit and gaining strength is a wonderful goal but how will that
get you into the size 14 pants without a calorie defict to lose weight?

Did you check out that site that was suggested? Is it any good?

Which one, Jen? There have been a lot of URLs flying around. :-) If you
mean the alternative, smaller group that someone suggested,

That's the one I was thinking of. She did say it was more for support
didn't she? Oh well. I think I'll use my killfile a bit too. It might
help.

Jen

no, I haven't
inquired further about that. The person who mentioned it said it was
geared toward support per se, which may be great if that's something
you're looking for. I looked for a BFL-oriented group without success;
there's probably one buried somewhere in yahoo groups or wherever, but
none was jumping out at me. The BFL site itself has a message board that
looks pretty repetitive and has no thread structure.

Building muscle mass, especially for a woman your age, can be much more
difficult than losing fat.

No so far. I have no idea where you have obtained this frankly bizarre
generalization.

How do you know that you are building muscle? Getting stronger doesn't
equate to larger muscles. In fact, early in a new training regime most
of
the strength gains are from muscle adaptation. And the fact that women

have
a difficult time gaining muscle, at ANY age, is not a "bizarre
generalization". It is a proven fact. Women are not built to gain

muscle.
They are built to store fat, it is part of nature. I could site many
many
references to back this up, but you don't care, do you? You will believe
what you want to believe.

Building muscle after age 40 for a women can be difficult. Unfortunately
we
lose muscle mass as we age. Exercise is important to stop the loss due to
ageing.

That looks like a useful site.

snip And, yet, what you're doing is not working for you.

Again, I don't know where you're getting this. I've been doing this
WOL six weeks and have reduced my pants size and gone from nada
strength to being able to deadlift 120 lbs and bench 80.

Well, I think where he is getting it is when you posted "My progress
just feels too slow, and I am discouraged". If you were happy with
your progress, if you felt what you were doing WAS in fact working for
you, why would you have posted this in the first place?

Sometimes people are just looking for some encouragement. I think that,
for only working at it for 6 weeks, Edna is making progress. Maybe this
thread has given her the opportunity to re-examine her choices and see
that she is doing ok--and now she has added biking to her routine and
will probably see even more progress.

In my experience, it took way more than 6 weeks to see any real
difference. Of course, I subscribe to the "I want it and I want it now"
club, but that is just not how things work for me anymore when it comes
to weight loss...

Yep, I'm a card-carrying member of the same club. And it does take a
while to see real results--and, hopefully, habist changed for the good
along the way. =c)

If progress happened too fast, we'd take it for granted and it'd be way too
easy to slip back into old habits. Well...it seems like it's pretty easy to
do that anyways!

I'm confused too. Becoming fit and building strength, imo, should be the #1
priority anyways. But fitting into smaller pants is not the same as
building strength and becoming fit. They are two different goals.

Edna, I don't know who you have killfiled, but this site might have more of
the sort of info you'd be interested in. There's even a section on weight
lifting to lose weight. I've just had a quick browse, but I'll look at it
more when I have time.

Might be worth a look

This has been a darned confusing thread, all told. :-) I've started a new
thread that may address the issues confusing you. If not, I hope you'll
post to that thread. If so, post anyway if you want :-D

Thanks for the heads-up, Jen. I bookmarked it for future study just before
you posted.

I agree--and we didn't "progress" to the bodies we are trying to slim down
really quickly, either. For me, I want the way of life I am building to be
permanent--not a quick fix that will be gone in a flash.

I think it's called "moving the goalposts" :-).
