Congratulations on your loss, that's wonderful! Boy have I needed to talk to you, you've no idea. Thanks so much for replying. I've lurked here a few times and read people who needed to lose fifty pounds or so, or those of seemingly small stature in whom a loss of twenty or thirty pounds was a big deal. Currently I need to lose two hundred and it's not a battle anymore, it's war. May I ask, how do you approach exercise? I bought a yoga tape designed specifically for heavy people and it's a challenge. The thought of doing it more than a couple times a week depresses me because it's so overwhelming. If doing it for the full-length of the tape overwhelms you, consider breaking it down into smaller doses: 10 minutes here, 20 minutes there. Maybe just follow one or two moves for the week, til you get the hang of it then move on...baby steps is what keeps many of us on track. Then there's walking, which totally wears me out, and afterward I don't want to do anything but sleep for three hours. (I'm ashamed to be telling all this on myself but what can you do. When a person needs help, they need help, and it isn't happening if I'm not asking.) There's swimming but it takes a week to get over the laughter, constant staring and half-whispered jibes I get from showing up at a public pool. (I happen to think my bathing suit is very appropriate and cute, by the way. I think it's me that's causing the problem.) Walking can be tackled the same as yoga (or any other exercise)--just break it down into what you can do now, and increase your activity level as you gain confidence and energy. If you wear yourself out you'll quit trying. Don't quit. As for the pool, I really don't know what to say, other than no matter what we do, we can't control other people's nonsense. They're idiots. Swim anyway. So exercise is also a big challenge. Truthfully I begin to think maybe I'm taking on too much. I've been sedentary for so long, maybe it'd be better to begin with exercise I can do while sitting down, or using the back of a chair for support. Any thoughts? Any exercise you can do with any regularity is good exercise--whether it's walking, swimming, cycling, yoga, pilates, weight training, interval training, or just plain fidgeting. Just get up and move--you'll get there. Amy -- Check it out! http://www.tcfitnesschallenge.com/index.html |

I haven't been out of the house in years, and spend most of my time in the bedroom, or the bedroom next to this one that's used as the computer room. I'm very inactive, and just don't seem to get motivated to do anything but go to the bathroom and occasionally go to the computer room and get some more updates for Windows XP. But, I'm starting to get really bored, so that's a good sign. I'll have to get up just to keep from going crazy. -- Zilbandy |

Currently I need to lose two hundred and it's not a battle anymore, it's war. War for life... I've only got another 90 or so to go. It's tough. It's a long road and not every day is a success. I'm working to make each day better though. Slow but sure is the way I'm going this time. May I ask, how do you approach exercise? I bought a yoga tape designed specifically for heavy people and it's a challenge. The thought of doing it more than a couple times a week depresses me because it's so overwhelming. Hi Lisa, Everything *will* be a challenge at first. This is actually good, because the more an exercise challenges you, the more calories you are likely to be burning. When it gets too easy... that's the time to switch and try something else. So, don't be overwhelmed, just plug away and know that it will get easier. You see, when you are not physically fit, improvements will come fairly fast if you keep at it! And that can help with motivation. Go slow, remember your body isn't used to exercise, give it time to adjust. Then there's walking, which totally wears me out, and afterward I don't want to do anything but sleep for three hours. (I'm ashamed to be telling all this on myself but what can you do. When a person needs help, they need help, and it isn't happening if I'm not asking.) (I happen to think my bathing suit is very appropriate and cute, by the way. I think it's me that's causing the problem.) How far are you walking at a time? It might be more appropriate to walk a lesser period, but do it several times during the day if possible. Swimming is a good exercise, just shut the rude people out. I had someone congratulate me on being pregnant once... I wasn't. I simply said so, and boy did they shut up quick! People can look at and whisper about thin people too... they just do it for different reasons. Don't let the idiots stop you! So exercise is also a big challenge. Truthfully I begin to think maybe I'm taking on too much. I've been sedentary for so long, maybe it'd be better to begin with exercise I can do while sitting down, or using the back of a chair for support. Any thoughts? Anything you can do to start is good. Baby steps can be the way to go. If you can only walk for a minute, walk for a minute. Put some music on and bop to the beat... even fidgeting burns calories. -- Cynthia 262/243/152 |
