I'll try that on my ride this weekend....another metric century. Were
it
not for this problem, I feel I could do the full century. But I can't
imagine endurance that pain for 40 miles (it starts up at around 60
miles
without fail, it seems).

Of course, I don't feel I wear my shoes too tight, but I'll try your
suggestion anyway simply because I might be wrong! And the swelling
seems
plausible.

Last year, a guy at the LBS told me to take an extra pair of socks. He
said
to stop at the rest stop nearest the halfway point and change socks. He
said
it would give me a lift. Well, you know what? He was right! The dry
socks
were nice, but I also think the feeling had to do with sitting down,
taking
the feet out of the shoes and massaging them a bit before putting the new
socks on. Even just getting air on hot feet helped a lot.

I also do this with "head sweats". These are covers put between my head
and my helmet. This weekend was the first time I changed them, and it
worked out really well. I'll have to take socks, too. That's a good idea.

I have, in the past, gotten off the bike and massaged my feet on the side of
the road. Thing is, my socks don't feel wet, as they are those coolmax
socks with the wicking property. Of course, it can't hurt to try that
(changing socks) either since the cost is zero Heat does seem to be a
partial factor in all of this - except that on my last ride where the
burning occur, it was a very cool day. I think pedal pressure was in play
then. Come to think of it, I had not been on the bike in over a week due to
catching a cold. Who knows...

I have a head sweat (I won it at a charity ride)....I don't use it because I
think it will make me - hotter! Is that not true?

It might. However, they're made of materials that supposedly wick the
water away and allow the water to evaporate. I personally like them, as
they do stay relatively dry (the pads on my helmet will be totally soaked,
for instance, but the headsweats will be much drier). I don't go out
without them. I don't like the ones that you have to tie, though, as
these come too far down my neck and increase the heat. The ones I have
just have a tiny "tail" on the end. I also have the kind you have to tie,
but I no longer wear those. I also live in a much cooler climate than
you, although the last two weekends have been hot right at the end of my
rides (I actually used the zipper on my shirts, and opened my shirts the
entire way, during some of the hills -- I always thought this was a
gimmick, but it really helps!).
