Mostly I only do the ones that have to do with hygiene.

1.) Pluck & trim eyebrows (had them shaped with electrolysis once)
2.) Bleach brunette facial hair (and pluck occasional beard hairs)

I'm a blonde, so I don't have this problem. Don't pluck eyebrows,
hardly have any.

3.) Have hair cut & color & foiled every 6 weeks (this is a BIG expense)

Yes, but every 5 weeks. Costs around $200 or so with tip. You never
see any evidence that my hair is colored.

4.) Shave pits every day, below knee 2x week and above knee occasionally

Nope. Hardly have any body hair. Once a week is overkill, even in the
summer.

5.) Pumice callouses on feet, keep toenails cut & polished

I keep my callouses pruned because I ice skate. I don't polish or buff
anything. Of course, I cut my toe-nails but not every day.

6.) Use cuticle remover on cuticles and orange sticks and buff fingernails

Nope. Don't have overgrown cuticles, don't do manicures.

7.) Use wart remover patches for rare wart here or there (not genital!)

Nope. Don't have any.

8.) Brush teeth 2x day with whitening toothpaste, floss daily

Of course.

9.) Put whitening peroxide solution on teeth at night.

I get it done by the dentist once a year.

10.) Treat chapped lips (mostly from peroxide) with lip balm

Don't get chapped lips for the most part, maybe when it's very cold in
the winter.

11.) Wash face 2x daily with face soap

Of course! Morning it's done in the shower.

12.) Use face lotion with sunscreen and body lotions as needed

Don't use sun screen except in the summer, I rarely go out in the sun
anyway. Lotion when I get out of the shower.

13.) I will occasionally, in the winter, go for tanning sessions.

Never. Very bad for your skin. This is why at 50 I have no wrinkles.

The things I don't do (or do only very rarely):
1.) Wear eye makeup of any kind (my eyes get red & irritated easily)

Don't wear makeup.

2.) Wear perfume (it seems like everyone is sensitive to chemicals lately)

Wear when it's not summer (bees like perfume). Jean-Louis Sherrer-2.

3.) Wear blush (I have good skin tone without it)
4.) Wear lipstick (I do occasionally, but it always makes my lips chapped)

Nope, don't do makeup.

5.) Curl eyelashes (I possess such a tool but don't use it)

Huh? Never even heard of this. Sounds icky.

6.) Wear cold cream or some sort of night cream on my face

Nope.

7.) I don't usually have a manicure.

Ditto, except never have a manicure.

8.) Wear contacts instead of glasses (I used to but allergies irritated my
eyes so much that the contacts were uncomfortable and I just stopped
wearing them.)

Nope, but considering lasix.

9.) I don't do anything with my hair besides wash it and occasionally
use conditioner. I've got a short curly cut and I don't even comb it, I
just run my fingers through it. No gels, no dryer, nothing whatsoever.

Mine's long, so I use a blow dryer.

Am I missing something important that everyone else does?

Sounds like you're doing three times as much as I do. Where do you
find the time for all of this?

Oh, and I guess that eating a healthy diet with lots of omega-3's and
water is important for my skin, as is getting enough sleep and exercising
frequently. In the largest sense those are part of my beauty regimen.

I eat a lot of fish. Take 4 grams of omega-3s along with my vitamins
each day. Make up daily vitamin packs once a month. Drink 3 or 4
liters of water while exercising. Exercise around 10 hours a week.
Sleep around 7 hours a night.

Not big into "beauty stuff". Elizabeth Arden would go bankrupt on me.

Default Beauty regimen question

I've got to ask my husband how to include pieces of a prior message in mine
so I can address specific points. I am very computerly challanged. In any
event, I had my first kid when I was 35 the last when I was 42. Truth be
known, I've spent most of our kids schooling being the oldest mom (with a
few exceptions). Nothing I regret since I had a great career first and no
regrets about staying home (other than screaming boredom at times) after #2
was born. I will say though, that 42 was the absolute limit for me...could
not have been 45 and gone through it again. Personally, the teenage years
are taking a harder toll on me than the toddler years. Elise.

Ouch! And quite likely untrue. A lot of people have kids very late. My
husband is going to be 50 when our youngest is in kindergarten.

One thing I do recall: all my peers were fat and sloppy when we first had
babies. But now the parents of the middle-schoolers and high schoolers
look pretty damn good. Somewhere in there they lost the weight and I'm

If it's nutrient related, it's because of what you ate (or were eating 3- 6
or more months ago. That's how long it takes for nails to grow out.

I've noticed that since I started drinking more water, I don't get the
cracking skin NEXT to my nails (and on my heels) that I used to get in the
winter. Side benefit.

Aside for those feeling that a tan makes them look healthier. Maybe now, but
wrinkles will catch up with you as you lose weight and age. Just a thought.

I use a very sticky wax adhesive papers for removing errant facial hair.

It
seems to last longer and works better for eye brows, etc.

The woman that does my electrolysis said that waxing is ok for the eyebrow
area but not for the upper lip or chin. Apparently, the follicles get easily
irritated in the mouth and neck area and it causes more hair to grow. I'm
learning how to do my own waxing since it's the only way I can do my
eyebrows - plucking is just too slow, tortuous and painful. I also need to
wax my legs because I can't get close enough with any razor due to loose
skin.

Also, I am the allergy child. I sometimes wake up looking like I have

been
beaten up with two black eyes. Don't laugh but Preparation H gets me
presentable in a short period of time.

I've heard of that before and plan to try it. School picture day is next
week!

What about your fingernails? There is nothing more elegant than a woman
with beautiful nails. I use a light brown, tannish sort of polish for
regular use because it doesn't show flaws as much as the slut puppy red
polishes which I reserve for special occasions.

I just trim my nails regularly and buff. I need to keep them short for
typing and typing instruction, volleyball, etc.

Lipstick is so very elegant but I hate it. Honestly. I have friends who
will not go outside without their lips on! When I go out with them, they
insist I put on my lips before we enter any public establishment. I must
admit, it does look good.

I've been using those lipsticks that stay on all day and they're pretty
good. I use my facial moisturizer on my lips in the AM and an overnight lip
treatment every evening and that seems to minimize the chapping and peeling.
We'll see how it works in the winter.

Glasses today can be very attractive. I wear them for reading and should
wear them more. If you have a good pair, I see no need to go without

except
for special evening occasions.

I switched to contacts this spring mostly for sports. I still wear my
glasses on occasions when I know I'm not going to be very active. I just
got a cute little pair that I really like. I still have to wear reading
glasses with my contacts so I have a few stylish pairs.

For years I used to wax my top lip and chin area. I'm almost certain
from experience that pulling the hairs in any way by the roots,
whether waxing or tweezers, causes them to grow back thicker. I then
had electrolosys on these areas, and it's one of the best things I
ever did.

Default Beauty regimen question

Geez, where do I start.

I've had laser hair removal on my face, legs, pits, and privates. It was
the best investment I ever made. I shave my legs 2x a month at most and my
pits about 1x a month. I have dark hair/pale skin... so the hair used to be
pretty thick. You need multiple treatments for it to work.

I get microderm every month to maintain my complexion. I started these
treatments when I turned 30. I have PCOs (www.soulcysters.com for info),
which can wreck havoc on a woman's face. Women like me have excess
testosterone/androgens.. which cause the acne and the reason I needed laser
on my face, etc. I get told now that I have beautiful skin even w/out
make-up. The acne, etc., has been under control for 4 years.

I wash face with purpose gentle face wash 2x a day. I use sea breeze gentle
skin toner at night. After washing, I put 2-3 drops of 100% pure jojoba oil
on my face to moisturize. This stuff is great. You can buy it at GNC or on
Ebay. It helps reduce fine lines and has antiseptic qualities to help with
acne. I use Mac Studio fix powder foundation, eye liner, blush, eye shadow
and lipstick.

I get a pedicure every 3 weeks or so, I can't handle doing my own feet...
too ticklish.

I get my hair cut every 6 weeks.... I get highlights every 2-3 months.

3.) Have hair cut & color & foiled every 6 weeks (this is a BIG expense)

I get mine cut every 4 weeks or so -- at the Hair Cuttery, which is
cheap. (I have a regular person there who knows what I like -- just
went this morning, in fact.) I've never had my hair colored, but am
toying with the idea now that I'm getting more gray hairs.

I started going white at the age of 20. Just an occasional white hair
(not silver, not gray, but just dead white.) Apparently red hairs turn
white earlier and my hair was originally auburn and went to dark brown
with auburn highlights and is now about half white in a skunk
streak. That's not a good look for my thirties. So I dye it. And dying
it started to look bad all in one shade, so I started foiling it.

I console myself that this expense once every 6 weeks (it's about $70) is
ALL I spend on my hair - no doodads, no dryer time, no mousse. I guess
it's a tradeoff.

4.) Shave pits every day, below knee 2x week and above knee occasionally

I always shave armpits and below knees on Fridays, since I go for a
massage that day. Sometimes I shave another time during the week. My
body hair is sparse and grows slowly, so this seems to suffice. I
never have shaved above the knee -- have no discernible hair there.
(I have a fair complexion and fair-colored body hair.)

Wow, that is yet another reason to wish I were blonde! I feel like 50% of
my beauty regimen is fighting coarse black hair. I've even been known to
shave my toes (for fear of looking like a hobbit.)

6.) Use cuticle remover on cuticles and orange sticks and buff

fingernails

Never do this. I don't even know what cuticle remover is. Why does
one want to remove one's cuticles?

The cuticle is the edge of the skin around the base of your fingernail. I
trim my cuticle with either a pumice stone or a cuticle knife and push
them back and use cuticle remover to get the residue off the
nailbed. This gives my fingernails a longer look and the cuticles don't
snag and get ratty looking. I acknowledge that this is a VERY minor
beauty point for an overweight woman to be obsessing over!

7.) Use wart remover patches for rare wart here or there (not genital!)

I've never tried this. I don't think I've ever had a wart. I do have
freckles and a few moles, but just ignore them.

I'm not sure where warts come from, but I suspect they are
contagious. I'll get plantar warts on a foot from time to time and then
I'll get a second and third. I remove them with OTC salycilic acid
pads. Twice in my life I've gotten warts on my leg, too. They catch at
the razor and they spread, too (not get bigger, but more crop up.) That's
what I am currently removing. I honestly don't know why they'd show up.

9.) Put whitening peroxide solution on teeth at night.

I've never done this. What sort of solution is this? Does it work?
I wouldn't mind having whiter teeth, certainly.

I'm not sure. See my reply to Det.

13.) I will occasionally, in the winter, go for tanning sessions.

I've never done this. Isn't it bad for you?

Yes. This is pure vanity with only a smattering of reasoning behind it.
I got to Florida in April and I figure some tanning sessions will give me
more of a base tan so I won't burn the first day I arrive. That's the
rationale. The real reason is that it makes me look healthier,
ironically. I have olive complexion (goes with the black hair) and I keep
a tan for a long time so it's worth it to me.

7.) I don't usually have a manicure.

I've never had one in my life. Nor do I ever polish my nails. I cut
them with a nail clipper when they get at all long. I hate the
feeling of long nails. (Comes from being a fairly serious pianist in
my youth.)

I like giving myself a manicure. I find it makes me feel "put together".
But see my obsession with cuticles, above. It's highly likely that I'm
just fooling myself.

Actually, one thing I do that you haven't mentioned is use lotions on
the rest of my body, bath oil in the bath, etc. I don't do these on a
regular basis but do them often. My skin tends to be quite dry. I
also think keeping it moisturized may help with skin tone, which is
particularly important since I want to minimize the saggy skin that
results from dieting.

My skin is literally striped. I am serious. I have a tan complexion but
the stretch marks are white and my skin is just filled with stretch marks
everywhere. I was staring at the front of my quads today. I've lost so
many inches off the quads that the skin is just sitting there in accordian
folds. I can't even imagine how I'd use calipers on it - it's so damn
THICK and BAGGY!

I'd say my skin is slowly receding, but it seems to be sort of collapsing
in layers on top of itself first. I feel like I'm sloshing around inside
it. My skin is quite possibly my healthiest and strongest organ right
now.

Someone else asked if water and omega-3 fats really was good for
skin. The answer is yes. Essential Fatty Acids are used in metabolic
processes having to do with the operation of various cells, i.e., they get
burned in the cells preferentially before they get used for calories for
other things. Skin cells are one of those things that prefers EFAs. I
read this in "Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill" by Udo Erasmus a long time
ago (or I just made it up, I can't remember which.) :-)

She can try taking MSM. It is a sulfur supplement that most pharmacies
carry. I get a big bottle at Sams for about $15. Take 1-2 pills a day (1-2
grams). Anyway, it helps with joints, collagen and skin/nails. It can help
with scars in general. I've been taking it for about 2 years now. I
learned about it from a skincare newsgroup. My nails grow very quickly. I
don't like to keep them long, because I type alot. I have to cut them every
2-3 weeks. My hair grows very fast as well.

Interesting thread. Several years ago, I pared down my lifestyle to
only doing basic hygiene stuff--stopped wearing makeup, shaving my
legs, blow-drying my hair. (Went through a big hippie phase--used
baking soda for deodorant and tooth paste, Dr. Bronner's for
soap/shampoo. It was kind of pre-mid-life crisis.) Now I do a more
moderate version. I have a product to wash just my face with, and I
moisturize and use sunscreen. I shave my legs for work, and wear
makeup (foundation, concealer, mascara and lipstick) on the 3
nights/wk I work. I dye my hair myself, and only blow it dry the
nights I work. I almost never have my nails painted, I go too long
between haircuts. I'm a VERY casual person, though, and my lifestyle
doesn't necessitate a lot of bells and whistles.

If you're looking to cut back on the regimen, I'd say keep doing the
things that make you feel really great, and lose the things you do b/c
you think you should. (I prefer to live with imperfect eyebrows rather
than put myself through the regular hassle of plucking/waxing.) You
might consider having your teeth whitened by a dentist, rather than
put up with perpetually chapped lips. Or brush your teeth with baking
soda, which also works well, but more slowly.

YMMV,

I like a white polish that is the same color as my tips so it isn't as
apparent when it's coming off. :-) Most of the time I just keep them
filed and buffed, though.

There have been very few special evening occasions I could do without my
glasses. Conception and childbirth come to mind. But other than that I'm
blind as a bat and nonfunctional without the glasses!

And, I wish I had been better about using total body
moisturizer and hand cream. My hands are very busy little things and are
noticed a lot. They look like they are older than me! Had I been brilliant
in my 20's, I would have religiously used hand lotion with sun screen!

It's kind of confusing to me why I have such thick, glowing skin at age
39. I can only assume it was from being obese. My always-thin sister
looks much older than I do. My face, neck and hands are smooth and
unwrinkled and I thank God for that! (My skin used to be in lots worse
condition when I was on a very low fat high carb diet.)

I have only seen one pic of you and my recollection is that you have thick,
curly almost black hair. My goal is to always have a good cut that requires
very little maintenance. It seems as though you have achieved this goal.
If your hair gives you fits, a good hair cut goes a long way.

The joke is that my hair got shorter with each child. It's true,
though: as my life got more complex I demand more simplicity from my hair.
I think the $600/year I spend on cuts and colors is an exhorbitant amount
of my budget, but I also think it's a great convenience and a great look.

Wendy
