Default any one here taking seritonin medications?

In the new atkins book it says that medications that control seritonin in
the brain may cause problems when trying to loose weight.
Is there anyone here that has had that problem, and what did you do to
overcome it?

I kept taking the medication and lost 40 pounds anyway. I stayed at
induction level carbs, but did introduce some of the OWL foods (nuts, flax
meal, etc.).

Starting over from scratch now because of some very stupid mistakes on my
part, but I did lose the weight, and I'm doing it again.

Sanity is more important than weight loss, in my humble opinion.

I lost a steady five pounds per month. Actually, a little more. I
low-carbed for six months, which would only be 30 pounds. Five pounds per
month is respectable. I started with 80 pounds to lose.

What are you taking the medication for?

I was takign Paxil (a selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitor; same category
as Prozak) and weaned myself off it about 2 years ago. I could not lose
weight and was having some worse side effects also. I was taking the SSRI
for anxiety (panic) attacks, and fortunately was able to find a much more
benign alternative (Clonzaepam, on an as-needed basis).

If taken for depression, I know that there are alternatives that do no cause
the weight gain; they are in a similar but slightly different drug class.
Wellbutrin is one of them; a dopanine reuptake inhibitor. Wellbutrin has
the opposite effects of Paxil/Prozak in that it can enhance weight loss as
well as augment sexual function, where the SSRI's can cause sexual
dysfuntiona also.

But! It depends on whether your depression is caused by seratonin
problems, dopamine problems, or "I can't remember the other one." If
something's working for you, switching to a medication that answers a
different problem than the one you're experiencing is no good.

Hmm.
I've been taking that medication for 10 years. No problems.

Celexa is also an SSRI, and indicates less interference with sexual
function than most others. I take both Celexa and Wellbutrin. I am still
losing weight, but maybe not as fast as I would otherwise. In fact,
without them, I would probably stop eating and lose weight, only to hit
a plateau after my body dessicated in the grave.

Weight loss can still be achieved if one is taking SSRIs and/or SDRIs.
It may be slower, but it is better than terminal.

I used to take Celexa, but stopped taking it, due to the cost of it. I now take
Wellbutrin XL, 300 mg. a day. (Get it in sample form from my doc, no cost at
all)

At first I did not notice a difference while taking Wellbutrin. So dropped it,
stopped taking it. Then depression set in again, now giving it another try.
Seems to be helping this time around. I notice a difference when I do not take
it. Helps too.. as a help with quitting smoking. Less sexual side effects,
appetite suprression. Paxil, took that for a bit there, and it caused big time
weight gain.

There are also supplements out there, that are supposed to be helpful for
depression. A good place I seen not long ago on the internet was my local
pharmacy, Krogers.. which is also a grocery store. But they carry alot of
supplements. They have listed on their site, natural meds/supplements to take
for different health issues, including depression. Maybe try looking for
something like that, if you are hesitant on taking a med like Paxil, Celexa, or
Wellbutrin.

I'm on one of the meds named as a potential problem, and have been
losing weight nevertheless. No way to tell if I'd lose faster
without, of course.
