Default Shopping for pants

My size 10s were a hair large (I thought), especially through the tailfeathers,
so I went SHOPPING today. What a farce. I don't know what happened to sizes,
'cause I know I haven't changed all THAT much since last fall. The size I fit
in depended completely on the cut of the pants and (to a lesser degree) on the
maker. I already knew that, even from maker to maker, the size I wore varied.
But I was still surprised with what I ended up coming home with.

I tried on tons of things, and what fit was a size 6 in Sag Harbor (will have
to be worn with a belt, but not loose, per se) and a SIZE 4 pair of pants made
by Crazy Horse (as they write on the tag, "a Liz Claiborne company." It was
ridiculous!

I also tried on some Ralph Lauren clothing, looking for something to wear to my
high school reunion. In pants, it was a tossup of whether the 4s or the 6s fit
better -- I leaned toward the 6s. And a size medium shirt fit, which didn't
surprise me. I didn't buy anything; I'm waiting for more fall clothes to come
in, because I'd like a better selection.

I've come to a number of conclusions: the size marked on the pants means
NOTHING. I brought the 6s I bought home, held them up to my 10s, and they were
the same size in the waist, though smaller around the butt (a boon, for me).
There's no way I'd wear a size 4 on a sizing chart, but there's no denying that
the 4s I bought fix, because of the cut of the pants....On a gut level, I
didn't want to buy ANYTHING because things were the "wrong" size (I figure I
should be in 8s) and I'm terrified it's a fluke I fit in them. And there's a
reason for it: the 4s fit tighter because I ate a big lunch on the way home
from the mall...thank goodness they're stretch. But I have them on right now,
and they are still reasonably comfortable.

So that's my great shopping experience. I walk away from it...not having a
clue, still, what size I wear. But I did get two pair of pants for work, and it
certainly was interesting.

Well the 4s don't fit so well now that I've eaten LUNCH...never shop on an
empty stomach...so those will go back. I guess I'm a size 6...or 8 or
something.

My coworkers told me that size varies even from pair to pair of the same
brand. I was told to take two pairs into the fitting room of the same size
for that reason. I just bought two size 10 articles of clothing today
(cords and a skirt), but I have 3 size 12 skirts hanging in my closet that I
can't fasten yet. It's all a new experience for me since I was in women's
sizes (14+) since 7th grade.

The 4s pushed on my hipbones (that's a new one), so I brought them back. It
wasn't all bad...I came back home with a matching sweater to go with the size 6
pants I'd bought earlier.

Yeah, I've noticed that, too. I tried on a second pair of the pants I bought
this morning, but in another color. They were noticebly too big! The pair I'd
bought (same brand, same style...same exact pant) had been slightly on the
roomy side but still fit fine.

With Gloria Vanderbilt, I've found that the sizing varies radically between the
styles. Which is really too bad, because I'd started to depend on that brand of
pants fitting...

I've found the black Lee jeans normally run smaller than the same style in
the blue denim. I wore Lee jeans for years but have recently switched to
Gloria Vanderbilt stretch jeans since they seem to fit me better.

That has definitely been my experience. Liz Claiborne seems to be one
of the worst. I have Liz Claiborne pants in size 14 that are loose,
and others in 16 that are just right. And I have Liz size Large tops
that are almost too tight and others in Medium that are just right. I
have a pair of Norton McNaughton pants in size 12 that fit perfectly,
but tried another style of theirs in 12 the other day and it was
definitely too tight. And I have two pairs of drawstring capris from
Erika in Medium that are exactly the same style (just different
colors); one is just right and the other almost baggy. I always tell
myself to try everything on, but sometimes I just take a chance. For
now, if something is too snug it will fit soon :-). If it's too big,
I return it.
