Default Training for the race?

There is a race on Monday (Monday is holiday here) in the park where I
exercise.
There are various distance you can choose, I think i will choose the 7
km long race.
There is a 12 km race too, but I've never run so far.
I bought a brand new pair of shoes, real women running shoes!
(Nike Pegasus 2004 something).
I already had Nike before, but these are special for women who run a
lot (ahah!).
Instead of running, I will be biking today.
I must cross train, and I think I will neither be in the first to
finish nor in the last to finish the race, so it does not really
matter if I do not train specifically for this event.
I will need all my powerwill, I simply HATE biking.

Good for you, Estella!

In honor of your resolve, I hereby pick my 5K race date: Tuesday, May
25th (with Tuesday, June 1 being a rain date.)

My experience with a race I ran in January is that you should show up in
running gear and move your legs over and over again. :-) I'm very glad
to have turned a very scary looming thing into an adventure in my past.

you don't *have* to cross train, but if you choose to do so you should
find an exercise that you like rather than one that you hate. doing
exercise that you hate is a waste of time.

I've been thinking about this. I've been a "fat-bottomed girl" for so
long that I just didn't feel like biking was the sport for me. But now
I'm wondering if I just need the right bike.

When we're in Key West we're doing the two-hour bike tour of the City.
I've wondered if I ought to get on a bike once or twice before that, but
haven't had the chance. I maybe walking funny after that ride!

I know I do not *have* to, but it is suggested in most training

and get used to it.
I know it would be better if I found something i liked.
In a couple of months I should be able to play tennis or go to the
pool.
At present it is impossible, because I attend a course in the
evenings twice a week and I cannot have my husband watch at the kids
*all* evenings.

What about sprinting. Its a good form of cross training used by many
runners too.

Everybody says I'm killing my knees jogging 5 times a week.

At present my knees are alright, but I must consider the idea I could
do too much too soon.
I do not know whether at my present weight I'm still too heavy for my
joints (158 lbs x 5'4''), I hope not, but I must not overdo.

So sprinting is not an option.

Biking, on the other side, is said to be good to strenghten muscles
over the knee.

It is also a good cardio builder as well as a good Interval training.

The coach I worked with last fall was also a runner and was showing us
some of those hop/skip type moves that runners do for training - in an
effort to build up the calves and get more of a spring into the step
for running. Its kinda silly looking to watch someone do - but I
have seen people doing them around the tracks.

There is also rollarblading, or trampoline jumping, or even jump rope.

Rollerblading could be an idea, I actually bought everything to roller
last year.
The fact is, I was feeling a bit stupid dressed like that.:-)
I am a mother of 2 and I am 40. :-)
Jumping rope is a killer for knees, I suspect, much more than running
every day, which I would very much like to.

But, I'm personally partial to biking. (the outdoor variety) Its one
of those exercises that doesn't feel like exercise to me. You get to

And it seems to be good cross training to avoid injuries in the knees.

Hey, I resemble that remark! :-) (I'm a mother of three and turning 40
this year.) When I went rollerblading yesterday I wore sweat pants
(easy to tuck into the skates), a t-shirt, a zip-up sweatshirt over it,
wrist-guards and skates. I didn't feel stupid. In fact, I felt like I
was having fun with the kids.

My only advice - don't choose a race that is longer than you've already run
and lay off of the running for a few days before the race. My races have
mostly been 5K and I tend not to run at all the two days prior to the race.

It's already too late to train for this specific event, but if you find that
you enjoy it (racing) then you can find numerous resources online to help
you set up a training for future events. I have a 5 mile race in June that I
need to get serious about if I want to beat my last 5 mile time. Right now
I can barely do 5 miles as my body seems to still be trying to recover from
a bad drug reaction a few weeks ago - and I'm pushing the weightlifting
lately and I'm not giving my legs enough recovery time for running.

Good luck with the race! Be sure to post a report when it's over.

Is that the latest consensus - a drug reaction? That'd be a nice
diagnosis (just stop taking the drug!)

Are you still having wild water fluctuations?
