Back again...
I am going back on my old post from say 2005. Sadly, between late
2005 to about August 2007, I've gained BACK the weight and then some but regained my footing and am back down to my 120's again! What changed between late 2005 and August 2007? Sadly, I started on a downward spiral around the holidays in 2005 and it stayed with me thru the next few months until I was back up to about 137-139. The worst part was during the summer of 2006 I had a fainting spell (turns out to be heat exhaustion, but I digressed...) which prompted a complete blood test. The blood test made me aware that I also had borderline high cholesterol!!! (Total: 203, LDL: 134, HDL: 64, Triglycerides: 88) Had to cut out foods with high cholesterol... didn't help much though. And the weight wouldn't budge. I started with a personal trainer in 2007 to see if I could lose any weight thru him. Well, I started to lose the weight, then I started stalling again. When he asked me what I'm eating and when I'm eating, his face was like =:-O and he suggests that I do the 5 meals a day plan. Well, all that is good and well and all, but the problem is that I don't know my portions and I don't know what to eat and WHEN to eat it (well, except for some protein after a long workout...) Needless to say, I've gained back that weight and then some to 137. Long story short, we had a disgreement and this trainer was gone!!! I started with TWO personal trainer in August. One of them is a ballet dancer. The other one is probably the more qualified one... her speciality IS figure skating (my sport.) Anyway, I alternate between the two per week and it's been going good. In addition to that, I've also found a registered dietitian around that time who knew what she was doing and retaught me about foods, portion control, carbs, fats, proteins (lean vs. not), etc. In three months, my weight went from 137 to now 122/123lbs. I also lost a few inches off my waistline and hips. Dietitian officially put me on maintanance mode as of last Saturday. I definitely will continue to be under the guidance of my dietitian to make sure I do NOT regain that weight again. Truth be told, I didn't know how to eat 'til now... I've always eat whatever is out there, but as I got older, the consequences of doing that was showing. As for the other trainers... I am definitely stronger and more flexible than before now. Even though I'm at 123 (and I'm still 5' 3.5"), I definitely don't look anorexic. I just look fit and lean...and I have muscles too! WHOA!!! Now my dilemma... even though I'm at my goal weight, I still feel that I look a bit bloated (could be that time of the month but that's not due for at least two weeks...) The stomach isn't flat yet -- I'm still a bit "soft" (but not flabby) there... but my dietitian thinks that I should stop and start on maintanance b/c I'm "thin enough now." I'll talk to my trainers about this, but I could tell 'ya one of the trainers told me the last time she weighed me and took my body fat % that I should consider "finding my happy medium weight" and stick to it. Part of me wants to lose just a couple more pounds and dream of having that nice flat abs that you can bounce a quarter off of and I'm close to having it. Other part of me tells me to stick with the dietitian's (and one of the trainers) suggestion. I don't want to get too thin, obviously and don't want to worry DH. OTOH, I do dream of totally flat abs... (My kind of dilemma if you ask me... *sigh* :-) Cheers, Joanna |

Well, if the body fat reading is correct and they notoriously are not correct, you could certainly lose a little more weight. 27% is rather high in fact. I might shoot for 20%. The recommended % body fat for women is 20-21%. What is your height? Just make sure you stay within the medical range for weight (which is based on your height). Everything starts with height. dkw |

Did it really take a dietician and two personal trainers for you to lose 15 lbs? Cheers, Joanna del |

My dietitian says it's time to "chill" on the weight loss and work towards maintanance. Now why would she tell me that if I'm still at that "high" a body fat percentage? (My trainer also told me to start "finding my happy medium" on the weight loss too at our last training session. Of course, at the time I was 1-2 lbs from my goal.) I'm using one of those Tanita scales where you have to take off your shoes and socks and step on this medal thing and hold more medal things in each hand. My understanding is that it's rough estimate within a couple of 1% in either direction. I'll admit... all along I was thinking "How could I have THAT high of a body fat % and look like me?" I mean, when I was "near obese" on the chart, I definitely did NOT look anywhere near obese. (Sure, I was overweight, but if you were to look at me then and I tell 'ya that I'm on the obese side of the chart for body fat %, you wouldn't have believed me.) I know for sure that I'll chill when I always look like I do in the morning before breakfast. (I looked at myself this morning and my abs looked PERFECT! Looks almost like those models in the fitness magazine even! Of course, I'm thinking afterwards "Just wait 'til I get some breakfast in me..." LOL!!!) *sigh* I'll talk to my trainers about this. He (and she) should be able to help me find that "happy medium." Cheers, Joanna |

He (and she) should be able to help me find that "happy medium." Cheers, Joanna- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - I can't answer that question. Since you are within your medical range for weight, of course it is alright to chill, but it is also OK to lose a little more weight since you are at the high range of your weight range and your body fat seems a little high. Normally your overall shape...pear vs. apple shape determines the hardest and last area of your body is the last to show the effects of weight loss and exercise. Long-waisted people who are usually smaller above the waist find the hips and legs are where the biggest problem is, and more long- legged folks (apple-shapes) have problem with the stomach and perhaps arms. Still, those areas will and do reduce in time. I suppose with females, there are lots of internal things going on as well so that may not respond quite as predictably as it seems to with males. Here is one of the best sites for looking at ideal weight that I have found. You can play with the numbers too and see what effect height has on ideal weight for example. dkw http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm |
