And a lot of fiber, either in pure form, or in high-fiber, low-glycemic
carbs like All Bran Plus. And water should be drunk all day long, not
just to wash down the protein and fat.

And, green, leafy veggies. Lots of vitamins, and minerals in the
greens. Okay, iceberg lettuce is mostly fiber and water, but
otherwise...

Hi. I've successfully been in Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet - 7.5
pounds so far but have a questions about the book's list of foods. The
Phase 1 recipes have ingredients in them that are not on the
corresponding "Foods to Enjoy" list. For Phase 1, Edamame, Avocado,
onions, radishes, tomatoes, black olives, almonds and sour cream and
blue cheese appear in recipes but are not listed in the food list. Are
these foods typically considered low-carb enough to be eaten in Phase 1?

Should my food be restricted to just what's listed in the Phase 1 food
list or should I add the extra foods found in the recipes to the list?

Thanks for any advice.
Mickey

I do tend towards a Calvinistic view when I set out to accomplish a goal,
but that really wasn't my point. The point was: if you don't know for sure,
don't stick it in your mouth. Kind of like when you engage in sex with your
boyfriend.

In the States we have "All Bran with Extra Fiber". It has 20 grams of
carb total, of which 13 are fiber. 50 cals a serving, 7 grams of
bioavailable carbs.
Stats for Kellogg's All Bran with Extra Fiber (US):
http://tinyurl.com/o4r6
Stats for All Bran Plus (UK site)
http://tinyurl.com/o4rk
Stats for All Bran Plus (Denmark site)
http://tinyurl.com/o4s4
The Norway site:
http://tinyurl.com/o4tw
You'll really have to dig, but according to the site the All Bran Plus
in Norway has 29 grams of fiber per 100 grams of cereal, like it does in
the UK. By way of contrast the US's All Bran with Extra Fiber has 50
grams of fiber per 100 grams of cereal (based upon the Nutrition Facts
info being given for a 26 g serving), and just under 200 calories per
100 grams.

Take care,
Carmen

There is an updated food list that is available if you are a paid
subscriber on the site. I believe it incorporates the ingredients
in the recipes. (That book has some real inconsistencies! They
should have had me working for them!) South Beach's goal is not
to be low-carb, although Phase One, which seems to function like
the first stage of Atkins to wean you from your cravings etc.,
does eliminate most carbs. Agatston distinguishes between what he
calls good and bad carbs, which becomes apparent after Phase One.

Per 100 grams? I don't think so. How much All Bran Plus do you think you
need? It has about 20 grams of fiber in it. You can probably satisfy the
fiber need, at least as far as dealing with constipation goes, by eating
about 50 grams every three or four days. Slice a half a small banana on
top, and use enough skim milk to make it easy to swallow. Some people
use orange juice (unsweatened) instead of milk.
