OT Rice cooker
I have hesitated to ask this because I know that this there are a lot of
people following a low carb WOE on this ng -- I totally respect that but it's not my WOE. I tend toward Mediterranean and whole grains. (FWIW, I follow the low carb diet for two reasons, there is always stuff to learn and I have several friends following low carb plans.) Anyway, I would like to get a rice cooker. I am totally at a loss. It seems like the best brown rice/bean/cook grain (barley, etc.) come from the fuzzy logic ones, is that right? Or would I be perfectly happy with an on/of rice steamer/warmer? It sucks that you can either get the fuzzy logic or the steamer and not both. Oh well, life works that way sometimes. Anyway, any recommendations for rice cookers would be appreciated, including size info. I think that I need a small or medium one for my two person household, will a small be too small? -- jmk in NC |

"Ignoramus32269" wrote in message ... We own a 3 quart rice cooker from walmart. It is just a bowl on a heater element, probably it stops when it senses the bottom becoming hotter that 100 degrees C, which means that all water has been absorbed by rice. It works beautifully for any quantities and is very easy to use. Set it and forget about it. As I have no idea what are the fuzzy logic ones, I cannot comment, but I recommend my cheap model heartily. i Ditto on the WalMart purchased cooker. Looks similar to and about the same size as a medium crock pot. Love mine. Steve |

Steve I don't cook rice too often but when I do I fix it in the microwave - quick, easy and requires no special cooking utensil. |

OT Rice cooker
In article , jmk wrote: Anyway, any recommendations for rice cookers would be appreciated, including size info. I think that I need a small or medium one for my two person household, will a small be too small? I've got a 5 cup fuzzy logic rice cooker and I LOVE it. Of course the best parts of it are the non-stick bowl and the timer (put rice in at night, have it beeping when I wake in the morning), which are available on some cheaper models. It also makes better rice, I usually eat Japanese style Calrose rice, but I've also done some brown rice in it that was very good. I like the 5 cup size because it can do 1 cup of rice fine if it's just me, or I can do a full 5 cup batch if I have friends coming over, if I'm making sushi, or if I want leftovers. There's been quite a few days where I'll use it more than once in a day, and since it's so easy to clean, it's easy to do. The one I have is similar to this one on amazon, although I paid a bit less for a 5 cup: http://tinyurl.com/ypg8u I had a basic $20 one for years, and even though my new one was expensive, I've never regretted getting it. (And I'm cheap!) Mieko |

I just wish that I could find some place local that has these I'm finding this purchase to be way too complicated! Hmmm. Maybe the National/Panasonic model? http://tinyurl.com/3ghpj -- jmk in NC |

OT Rice cooker
White rice is easy to make. Use twice as much water as rice in a regular pot
with lid. Salt water and heat to boiling. Add rice, turn heat to as low as it wiill go, cover with lid, allow to cook 20 minutes. Turn off heat and allow to steam 10 minutes. Fluff with fork, done. OT Rice cooker
I bought the small 2 person National rice cooker 30 years ago and it
still works. Went to a party asked a Japanese woman the secrets of making good rice. No secret she said, just buy rice cooker. That said, I bought a Tiger digital rice cooker several years ago. While an expert at cooking rice can make it perfect every time in a bad pot on a faulty stove, the average person may not always succeed. The digital rice cooker makes rice as perfect as the best Chinese restaurant rice at home with little or not effort. With the more generic type it was more hit and miss but still they made okay rice but not perfect rice. Also those that have a keep warm switch are well worth the investment. You get what you pay for generally. So the question is: How fussy are you about food? I am very fussy. jmk wrote: I have hesitated to ask this because I know that this there are a lot of people following a low carb WOE on this ng -- I totally respect that but it's not my WOE.
