Is my appearance me?
I went on Atkins for 2 valid health reasons: (1) avoid, if possible,
Adult type 2 diabetes and (2) see if it would lower an elevated liver reading. There are things I want to do in my remaining time in this world, and overweight makes it either difficult or outright prohibitive. I do not weigh. I cannot answer the question "how much have you lost?" But I keep getting this chorus, ad nauseum and ad infinitim, ranting of "how good you look." I've told one person my reasons, over and over, yet her sole emphasis is on looks. Like that's more important? Like none of my other life's accomplishments are diddly because I'm fat? Do I really care what my looks are to another person and that it's important they endorse me as approved? If we want people to support us, then maybe we can educate them to support us in a health life style choice? I fall into the preening from the look-good praise, but know it isn't enough to keep me focused. I have lost and gained weight in the past. Looks isn't enough. It's scared witless that does it!! ;-) Anyone agree with me? Joan |

Different people place varying degrees of importance on it. It is the first thing you notice about a person when meeting them. It is the only thing people that don't know/never meet you know about you. Usually the better someone gets to know you the less important it becomes. BJ |

If it feels good when people praise you, that's cool - but it needs to supplement your own sense of self-worth. Which you clearly have, or you wouldn't be bothered by your friend's insistence on looks as a prime worth measurer! Personally, I'd be happier if the face in the mirror didn't look so much like my Dad these days... Nicky. -- HbA1c 10.5/6.4/6 Weight 95/79/72 1g Metformin, 75ug Thyroxine T2 DX 05/2004 |

when I rant and rave about how fabulous someone looks, it is usually because
they are oozing vitality and sunshine and happiness.. I want to lose weight because I am tired of looking like a hag. Plain and simple. Forget all the health benefits of losing 100+ lbs. I see women all the time that look 20 years older than I do, all because they dont take care of themselves, and I know that I look the same way. Yes, am teaching my children to love themselves and their bodies no matter how they look, and how to make proper nutritional and lifestyle choices. However, I do secretly gloat over their long, lean bodies--thank god for their father's genes! I would love for one of my friends to rave about how fabulous I look, and they wouldnt have to even mention one word about all my other accomplishments in my life. Bring it on! I'm ready! I think people focus on looks because it's a more tangible concept. They can see it, it is right in front of them. Also, for some to focus on your health, then they have to take stock in their own, and it may not be comfortable for them. Or they might just be really shallow people. ;o) Unfortunately, appearance is our first impression we have of people. It's just how human nature is. -- Lisa 208/159.5/145-150 High weight in 2004: 228 Low-carb since June 2004 |
