Caffeine and Weight Loss
Hello all.
I have read on and off about the effects of caffeine on your weight loss. I don't recall, does this have to do with metabolism? I am a longtime caffeine-a-holic. Luckily I don't drink coffee, but at one time I drank way too much Coke. I now drink Diet Coke (I know, not that much better). For years, I have tried to give up caffeine or wean myself off, only to fall right back into the habit. I guess the splitting headaches and moodiness don't help either. Every time I've tried to quit, I have gotten what I call "drill hole headaches" where it actually feels like someone is drilling a hole into my forehead. Argh. I know there are "alternatives" to traditional sources of caffeine. For instance, my yoga book suggests the coffee substitute "Bambu", but I'm sorry. I drink Diet Coke because I LIKE Diet Coke. When I was on Weight Watchers a few years ago, I was able to lose weight, even with a can of Coke a day. Now that I drink Diet Coke, however, I think that 0 point thing might get too enticing for me. Is anyone else in here addicted to Diet Coke? If so, how much do they drink a day? What is recommended? Do you think it will affect my ability to lose weight? Thanks for any help or feedback! Do you think it will affect my ability to lose weight? I'm not addicted to Diet Coke. I *am* addicted to coffee -- three cups a day of dark roast, black, no sugar (I don't believe in diluting my caffeine). I'm sure this isn't very healthy for me, but I'm not convinced that it's all that unhealthy either. However your question prompted me to google about it. I found this site: http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/...ger/egger.html It says in part (edited by me to remove footnote references): "Several good quality studies have examined the effects of caffeine on weight loss in humans, but usually in combination with other substances. Only one has examined caffeine alone (200 mg daily) added to an energy-restricted diet in a placebo-controlled, double-blind trial. In that study caffeine was no more effective than placebo in promoting weight loss." Anny |

Caffeine and Weight Loss
I have not seen anything that specifically prevents someone doing WW from
drinking coffee or caffine sodas. I know that Atkins wants you to avoid it: Why is caffeine unacceptable in the Atkins Nutritional Approach? Excess caffeine can drop blood sugar levels and leave you craving sweets. If you're addicted to caffeine, you must give it up. The best way to do this is to segue from the high-octane stuff to decaf by gradually adding decaf to your full-force brew until you are drinking straight decaf, which you can enjoy with cream. Water-processed decaf is preferable because it does not use chemicals, as other decaffeinating processes do. Note the word "Excess". Drinking a can of diet coke a day is not in excess nor is 2 cups of coffee in the morning. This is aimed at those that will drink coffee/soda all day long instead of water. IIRC,WW allows you to have 1 or 2 non-water beverages a day. So as long as you are getting your water then you should not see any impact on your weight loss by drinking diet coke. You might find yourself reaching for sweet things with points if you cut it out entirely. "aleen" wrote in message ink.net... Hello all. From what I've read caffeine has slight thermogenic affects. It's usually combined with ephedrine or other drugs to get any significant affect. Taking drugs for weight loss is an indication that you are heading for the dark side though I drink Diet Coke because I LIKE Diet Coke. Do you think it will affect my ability to lose weight? I drink lots of diet coke, not necessarily the cranded stuff though. It's probably not a great idea to drink so much. I don't think it's had any effect on weight loss. Caffeine does have another use. You can take it just before a workout to get just that bit higher. That might contribute to weightloss. Caffeine and Weight Loss
I made the decision to wean myself off of caffeine four or five months
ago. I wasn't a big coffee/coke drinker, but I averaged at least one cup of coffee a day, and the occasional diet coke. I had the headache thing for a while after stopping the coffee, but it soon passed. I decided to (mostly) eliminate caffeine more for health reasons than anything else. I'm working really hard to choose things that are good for me, and I couldn't see where coffee/cokes were doing much for me other than hyping me up. Now, this doesn't mean that I don't have any caffeine at all. I occasionally have coffee, a diet coke every now and then, and I drink tea almost every day. Some caffeinated (sp), some not. I figure the health benefits of tea outweight the potential damaging effects of the caffeine. I think it's up to you what you want to do. If you enjoy diet cokes, then have them. Maybe think about moderation, though. If you think you may be drinking too many a day - you know what? You probably are. Tracy Hello all. Caffeine and Weight Loss
I have lost all my weight while drinking caffiene. 24 oz of coffee in the
morning. Maybe 2 diet sodas later. I am not sure how many diets cokes that would add up to, but it doesn't seem to have bothered my weight loss at that level. "aleen" wrote in message ink.net... Caffeine and Weight Loss
I drink about 24-32 oz. of coffee every morning. Sometimes a can of diet
Coke at lunch, sometimes not. Usually no caffeine at all after 1 in the afternoon, but that's because caffeine affects my sleeping at night. I can't say I've noticed any effects of caffeine on my weight loss. -- Linda P 232/153.6/WW goal 145 joined WW Online 22-Feb-2003 aleen wrote: Hello all. Caffeine and Weight Loss
If the thought of too much caffeine bothers you, try the diet caffeine free version. I work with a woman who had to lose the caffeine for health reasons, so she started out with 3/4 diet coke and 1/4 caffeine free until she weened herself to the caffeine free. Or you can allow yourself x amount of diet coke and then go with the caffeine free for a certain amount. I don't drink lots of soda, so it hasn't been effecting me too much. That said, Crystal light gives me the worst sugar cravings around....go figure. Julie "aleen" wrote in message ink.net... Hello all.
