Waist - How to Measure?
Not too long ago (about a week, I think) there was a report that
simple 'waist size' was the best predictor of diabites and other weight-related illnesses. It was found to be a better predictor than waist-to-hip ratio, and even BMI. I forget what the measurement was for men... 34 inches max I think. But does anyone know *how* these waist measurements are taken (for men)? I've seen the following recommendations: 1) measure what is 'traditionally' considered your waist - ie. where you wear your pants or belt 2) measure at the belly-button 3) measure at the narrowest point between the bottom of the rib-cage, and the hips These locations might all be one-and-the-same for Urkel... but are in very different spots for most men. I have no idea which is these is the correct way in context to the report that came out. Your help appreciated. Thx! |

Renegade5 wrote in message . rogers.com... 2) measure at the belly-button This is where I measure. It is also where I wear my pants, except for jeans. The last time I measured I was at 35". I hope to get down to around 32"; much lower than that and it becomes difficult to find pants in my neck of the woods. The abstract of this study do not show where exactly the measurement was taken, but your local library may have a copy of the full study which was published in the March 2005 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. |

Hello,
I was going to post this same thing the other day but ran into a problem when trying to send. Anyway your suppose to divide your hips into your waist. So if you have a 38" hips and 36" waist...divide 38 into 36=.94.... I read that researchers are using this hip to waist ratio to tell if one is fit. The goal to get to .92 or lower. I also ready you measure the waist across your belly button and parallel to floor all the way around. Hope this helps, Paul in NRH TX 300/198/180 My source on this was the Men's Fitness ABS Diet Book. "Renegade5" wrote in message . rogers.com... I do my offcial waist measurement at the thinnest part, which is also wear my pants go. I am short-waisted, so my belly button is lower. For my personal mea I do also measure at my belly button simply because I want to see the changes everywhere. And men should measure at the navel. That's what I seem to recall. I am surer about the one for women and I am defnitely sure that men and women should measure at different points. |
