Default My Cholesterol Results...

Before starting Atkins my total Cholesterol 260
My Triglycerides were 370
LDL 34
HDL 250

(going off of memory but these are pretty close)

My recent readings were Total 274
Triglycerides 35
LDL 42
HDL 283

So, TG and LDL were good but my HDL went up.

Dr. Wants me to go on Lipitor, I said not yet. So, he's giving me 3 months
to lower the HDL.

I'm in OWL

280/220/200

Any Advice?

Seeing an increase in cholesterol in the first three months is quite
normal in lowcarbing. It should be a temporary thing, though, and
beging dropping back down soon. Although there have been reports of
cholesterol staying high until getting close to goal and *then* dropping
down into normal ranges. How long have you been lowcarbing before you
took your last test? Was it a fasting test? Fasting tests are more
accurate.

Sensible man.

Are you sure you don't have your numbers for HDL and LDL reversed?

Total number is not as important as ratio between HDL and LDL. The
LDL/HDL Ratio is calculated by dividing your LDL cholesterol by your HDL
cholesterol. Assuming your numbers are backwards: that gives a ratio of
6.7, which is high (normal is considered to be less than 3.5). If your
numbers are correct (I've never seen HDL that high before) your ratio
would be 0.148 which would be fantastic.

Also c-reactive protien readings are more indicative of trouble.

Ask for a c-reactive protien test at your next scheduled cholesterol
test.

Why do you care what the scale says? It is an inantimate object that
sits on the floor of your bathroom. Would you listen to anything else
that sat on the floor of your bathroom? Lydia Ash

Even if he were that would not be such a bad thing. Losing weight usually
helps cholesterol numbers, but at first while on LC...

I think those LDL and HDL numbers are backwards. If so, HDL went up, as it
usually does. Trigs went way down, which is a very good thing. An increase
in LDL is to be expected, early on after a switch to LC.

Exercise does help HDL go up, so getting some exercise is a very good idea.

Yes, my bad. Sorry, my HDL and LDL are reversed. hdl is good

No problem. However, it always pays to be sure about this stuff. Try to up
your exercise, eat the good fats (ground flaxseed), and follow the WOE well
(this should increase your HDL and negates the effects, to some extent, of
your relatively high LDL). Your numbers should definitely improve (I think
they have already -- and remember, it takes a while before health problems
show up when cholesterol is high -- so don't be fearful of giving your LC
woe a chance to work -- but DO continue to get it checked every six
months -- and make sure your health care team is aware of what you're
doing).

Remember too that losing fat often brings down your cholesterol in and of
itself. That should be motivation for you to follow the WOE.
