Default Will an elliptical machine get me in shape for running?

if I do the elliptical machine for an hour a day (not saying I do
currently) will I be able to run much farther, or will the effect
barely be noticeable?

In athletic training, there is a "Rule of Specificity". Meaning, if you
want to improve your running, you need to train specifically, for
running, (even if you're doing a workout on resistance equiptment.)

The actual effect of the elliptical machine training, would depend on
exactly where you are, as an athlete, and how your session stressed
your muscles, cardiovascular system, etc.

An elliptical is a LOT better than nothing, but it lacks the important
characteristic essential to running, which is bearing your own weight,
and propelling that weight through a horizontal space.

Why not include the ellipitical as a 1 or 2 time a week workout, and
keep doing some running?
Or possibly doing some hard running one day, and just a light jog +
elliptical, on other days?

Cross-training in running is good, because it helps prevent over-use
injuries, which are common in running. At the very least, if you're
really motivated, the elliptical trainer should be great for that, and
to give you a workout when the weather is bad enough to otherwise make
you cancel the workout, entirely.

Sadly, the very fastest training for running, is repeated wind-sprints.
That's also the BEST way to get injured, discouraged, quit, etc.

What is your mile time presently, and what is your training routine?
Your goal sounds achievable, if your health is good.

Train carrying it. Compete not carrying it. You'll run a LOT
faster during the races. ;^)
