Food & Exercise -- 7/11/2007
Went to the gym for my usual Wednesday stuff. Afterward I had a
massage in the gym spa -- thanks to the gift card they gave me in Minneapolist :-) -- and then had a sandwich in the gym cafe. Didn't do much the rest of the day -- just odds & ends at home. Food: * 7:30 (home): oatmeal w/ peanut butter & flax seed * 10:45 (gym, between lifting & yoga): energy brownie * 1:45 (gym cafe): tuna fish sandwich on whole wheat bread * 4:00 (home): 1 peach * 5:30 (home): a bunch of veggies w/ f/f yogurt onion dip * 9:00 (home): 2 poached eggs on 1 slice whole wheat toast w/ 3 slices f/f cheese & grated French hard cheese; 1 glass wine Exercise: * 10:00: Lifting: shoulder warmups; snatch pulls; power snatch; power clean w/ split jerk * 11:00: 75-minute yoga class -- emphasis on holding poses for longer time Chris 262/130s/130s |

Food & Exercise -- 7/11/2007
Hi Chris,
I'm not a real drinker but I do enjoy the occasional glass of wine, or at least I'd like to. I really don't know enough about wine to go out and pick something off the shelf and know if its good or bad. In the past, I'd take that risk once and a while, you know, but now its a little different. I don't want to buy something, come home, look up the calories online, and find out its something I can't have. I'm wondering what might be good wines to try that aren't too terribly high in calories. I don't have any particular likes or dislikes, just wanting to try a few different kinds I guess. Do you have any recommendations for me? Thanks! |

I'm wondering what might be good wines to try that aren't too terribly high in calories. I don't have any particular likes or dislikes, just wanting to try a few different kinds I guess. Do you have any recommendations for me? Thanks! Well, first, types of wine don't differ much in calorie count, so I wouldn't worry about that when choosing wines to try. Most wines are between 80 and 100 calories for a 4-oz glass. If the wine tastes very sweet, it will have a few more calories, due to a higher residual sugar content, but even then not a lot more. (The only exception to this is fortified wines like port and madeira, which have about double the calories -- and more alcohol as well. But these aren't what one normally means when talking about sampling wines.) So... forget about caloric differences and just do some sampling of different types of wines. It's hard to make particular recommendations. I'd suggest going to a wine shop, if there's one in your area (rather than a supermarket or whatever) and asking the proprieter for a good, reasonably-priced wine to try in several of the main types. If you already know some things you like better than others, e.g., whites vs. reds, start with these. Like, if you light whites, you might take home a bottle each of chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, and riesling, and see what you think of them. If you find you really prefer one of them, then try some more of the same type, or ask that wine store proprieter for things that might be similar. (Generally, a wine store manager loves to have you tell them what you've tried and liked, as that really helps them make recommendations for you.) There are hundreds of decent, inexpensive wines out there -- you just need to get out there and start sampling :-). (An alternative -- or additional thing to do -- is to join a wine tasting group of some sort, if there are any in your area. That way you can sample a bunch of wines without investing in a bottle. For example, I belong to the American Wine Society, which has hundreds of local chapters -- you can check for groups in your area at www.americanwinesociety.org. You do have to watch the bread and cheese and such that will probably be served at the meetings, though :-).)
