Default Slim-Fast supporters???

I was thinking that the Slim-Fast program was a convenient way for me to go
so I bought their shake mix and meal replacement bars. I started yesterday
and now I read in this newsgroup that it's not the way to go. Can you tell
me why? I have dropped a pound from yesterday morning to this morning.
However, my body fat percentage went up by 1%.

Well - Go READ those posts we made.
You posted your original post on the 23rd - and apparently didn't go
purchase the stuff till the 24th and yet you had a bunch of responses
before then. You should have read first! Would have saved you a
bunch of money.

Go read the one from me. Heck - I'll do the work for you:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The tea shouldn't be a problem, but I would SERIOUSLY question the use
of slimfast.
You'd get the same results if you combined a glass of milk, chocolate
syrup and a vitamin, for a hell of alot cheaper and less sugar.
Its ironic how they promote using a sugar substitute the rest of the
day, yet their products are so loaded with sugar to begin with.
You really are doing your body an injustice by going the "slimfast"
route. If you are into this meal replacement, please look into the
following:
1. Myoplex
2. Advantage Shakes
3. Medifast/HMR or other medically supervised meal replacements.
You need to learn how to eat right for your body - not just replace
food with shakes until you lose weight - because if you do that you
are bound to just regain the weight when you go back to eating. You
need a program that teaches you how to eat to maintain your weight
loss when you have lost the weight. Slimfast does NOT do this.
Slimfast is junk. Its overpriced chocolate milk w/ vitamins.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You lost a lb in a day. 1 - Normal bodily fluctuation. Or 2.
Water - bodily fluids. Its not fat loss. And if you went off
slimfast tomorrow and back to your old eating, it would come right
back. Matter of fact - unless you change your way of thinking and
learn a new way of eating, then once you stop any "meal replacement"
form of eating and go back to your old habits - you'll gain it all
back (and then some)... Why - because your old habits made you fat to
begin with. They will make you fat again.

You wanna lose weight and keep it off, you have to change your eating
habits entirely, for the rest of your life!

Slimfast is high in sugar and low in protein. A glass of nonfat milk has
the same amount of protein and a fraction of the calories. It has as much
sugar as like 2 or 3 candybars. This causes your insulin to spike and then
plummet, and causes sugar cravings. Look at other options that are low carb
and higher in protein like Met-rx, Myoplex, or Atkins Advantage shakes.

dropping a lb in one day is going to be water weight - a lb of fat = 3500
calories, and I'm sure you didn't create a 3500 calorie deficit since
yesterday. And if you are measuring your bf% with a tanita, you have to
know that those can be off by as much as 7%.

OK....Slim-Fast is out. I need to go on a diet but I don't know what to do.
I have been overweight all my life and it's hard to break a habit. Anyways,
I need to lose 10 pounds to reach my goal weight and also 4% of body fat.

Ok, if you are only 10 lbs overweight, you're in good shape. But being so
close to goal, you are not going to drop weight as quickly... Expect maybe
1 lb per week max. Eat around 8-10 cal x current bodyweight in lbs.
Exercise 30-60 minutes per day 3-5 times per week. Start a weightlifting
routine (free weights or nautilus) and do your cardio afterwards. I
generally lift for 30 minutes, then do 20-30 minutes of cardio. Cardio
helps you burn calories during exercise, lifting weights will help you
increase muscle mass, which burns calories around the clock. Eat at least
1g of protein per lb of bodyweight.

If you want meal replacements, try something low carb and high protein (good
suggestions have already been made). But you are also going to need to
learn how to eat real foods that meet your needs nutritionally. You might
want to buy some bulk protein powder to make your own at home meal
replacements. Currently my favorite is vanilla whey mixed with peanut
butter, nonfat milk and ice - like a peanut butter milkshake...

10lbs? and you claim to be overweight?

OK - post the stats please. Age, weight, height.

Then post a typical day's consumption for food and beverages.
Then post what exercise you do .
Lets see where you are going wrong.

I'm serious here. Dispite my comment in the first line.

Lets start from scratch. Lets look at how you eat and live, what
you weight and where you want to get to. Once we see where you are
at, we can adjust to figure out where you need to go.

Thanks for the help. I'll start looking into those new bars tomorrow. I
just bought the CableGym so I'll start on that when it arrives.

I'm male, 36, 5'2" and weigh 140. The last time I checked my BMI was 26.

I have a cup of tea for breakfast. I usually don't eat lunch because I'm
not hungry. I have a pretty big dinner in my opinion because I usually feel
bloated afterwards (meat, rice). I don't really have vegetables. I have a
piece of cake and another cup of tea at night.

I don't exercise except for walking.

I'll certainly give it a shot. I guess if you're 100 pounds overweight then
losing 10 pounds would be easy. But if you're 10 pounds overweight then
losing only 1 pound would be difficult.

Losing 10 lbs is easy. Start walking a lot (1+ hours a day) and stop
eating any sweets and junk food. No need to go on a "diet", just do
not gorge on food, eat regularly, that's all. Eat normally, but better
food, and exercise. In 2-3 months you are very likely to drop 10 lbs
and feel good. And unlike slimfast, it will work long term.

It is great that you decided to drop some weight before you became
very fat. Note also that 4% of body fat is very, very little fat.
