Hey, Neil ( calorie counting)
Well, I decided to count everything today.
For dinner I made a huge batch of chicken stir fried-rice. Chicken breast, broccoli, pea pods, corn, bean sprouts, some soy sauce, ginger, rosemary, very little olive oil. And brown rice. It made 10 cups total. I ate 2 1/2 cups, which is quite alot of food. I ran everything through a calorie calculator, and the entire wok full of food was only about 1700 calories. That means my bellyful was only about 500 calories! Now that's some bang for the buck, in terms of calories. Plus a great fiber blast! I even created a spreadsheet that adds up all my calories consumed, subtracts my exercise calories and my BMR calories, then divides that amount by 3500 to tell me my delta-weight for the day. So in theory, the spreadsheet tells me I'm down .38 pounds. It will be very interesting to do this for a week or two and see if any of it is accurate. I shall have to measure my vodka tonight, though, which I'm not in the habit of doing. |

Hey, Neil ( calorie counting)
So what did you end the day with, Mitch? Calorie deficit of 1170, which should theoretically equate to a loss of .33 pounds. Now, here's the fun part. If the math and theories turn out to be correct, I could sit down on Sunday and make a meal plan, and (theoretically) calculate how much I will lose that week. How cool is that? Let's watch! BTW...I can see that the empty calories of the evening cocktail are a major player. That needs to go. |

Well, the scale says I lost a pound yesterday.
I know that can't be right, but I'm recording it anyway. :-) If, after many data points, the actual weight loss ends up being more than the theoretical, I guess that means I'll be able to calculate my actual BMR, which must be higher than the 1800 estimate. Can you tell I used to be an engineer? |

Hey, Neil ( calorie counting)
I also noticed when I got my new exercise bike that it's computer gives MUCH lower calorific expenditure readings There are many exercise calorie calculators in the internet. You can try some of those and see what they estimate. Here's one: http://www.caloriecontrol.org/exercalc.html My treadmill tells me that my workout is 575 calories. The link above says 400. But I'm pretty sure their idea of a brisk walk is not the 5.0-5.2 mph that I walk, and at a 5% incline. |

Hey, Neil ( calorie counting)
I went a step further.
I modified my spreadsheet to calculate BMI and BMR from my daily weigh-in, since they are both dynamically calculated from current weight. So as my weight drops, BMR drops, so that means fewer "freebie" calories, which affects deficit and weight loss calculation. Fun stuff. Just had a huge lunch and only 360 calories! |

OMG... you guys are soooooo overthinking this..

Can you tell I used to be an engineer? Seeing you 1800 cal estimate got my thinking. I'm using s/w on my PDA to track my eating + exercise. Early on, it calculated my BMR as 2900 calories/day. Putting the same figures into http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ I get 2500. I guess this means I've been mislead into how well I'm doing I also noticed when I got my new exercise bike that it's computer gives MUCH lower calorific expenditure readings for comparable effort/time to my s/w and my previous bike. FWIW, I always log the lowest reading, but I'm losing a little faith inthe application. Still, as long as the weight comes off, I guess I don't really mind. I'm intending to exercise more than I eat for the next few weeks anyway so all my BMR will come from fat! |
