In m, Jumpin' Jack Flash stated | Hey again guys, I have a couple more questions for you all. First of | all, why are you allowed to eat meat liberally during induction yet | you are limited in the vegetables that you can eat(the amounts of | them, rather than the kinds)? Because most meat has no carbs, veggies have some, not all the same amount so you need to stick those with lower carbs. | What about artificial sweeteners? Are they alright to use? Today, I | drank my coffee black with nothing in it, but I'm curious if I can | start to use artificial sweeteners? Yes, some people have various problems with aspartame, most get along with sucralose aka Splenda. Sugar alcohols are a different thing, they have some carbs though less than sugar and some have laxative effects. | | Is there a way to tell if you are in Ketosis? How is it that to start | you have to be under 20g of carbs for a couple of weeks? Will you be | booted out if you have 21g? And if so, does that mean you have to | start all over again? Ketostix can measure the ketones in your urine. Some people get bad breath from ketosis or a strange taste in their mouth. The 20g is Atkins induction, you can get into ketosis with more than 21. It is frankly impossible to exactly count the carbs you eat, if you measure everything you'll get more accurate but particularly with produce there are some natural variations in carb content, however, ballparking it will do. Most people will be in ketosis with 50 or even up to 100. In their Protein Power book the Eades start you out at 30. Is there a loose timeline for how long it takes for your body to go into ketosis mode? I've been 5 days of being under 20g of carbs, so I wonder if I could be already. I've also been walking 3+ miles a day, does exercise make a difference with how one goes into ketosis? |

It's when your body has used up its store of glycogen in the liver. Yes, you
are probably in ketosis. Yes, exercise makes a difference as it uses up the glycogen faster. The purpose of Induction is to clean the stored carbs out of your system. It is NOT to lose weight! Thus, the key factor is how many carbs you eat, and nothing else. Meat has no carbs, so you can eat all you want. Vegetables have carbs, so you have to limit them. If the purpose of induction is to get rid of stored carbs, then why does it last for at least 2 weeks? After a the first few days of induction, your body is in ketosis and burning stored fat, not carbs. Induction is to get into ketosis, start the weight loss process, and eliminate cravings caused by consumption of excess carbs. Once you're done with the two week Induction, your body has switched to a fat-burning metabolism and you start OWL, where you start limiting all foods you eat (calories) and can start increasing the vegetables you eat (until your CCLL). What about artificial sweeteners? It depends on how they interact with you. Splenda and erythritol seem to be the safe ones, but you have to try and see. Is there a way to tell if you are in Ketosis? You stop being hungry. Ketostix show pink. You've just lost 5-10 lbs of water weight. How is it that to start you have to be under 20g of carbs for a couple of weeks? Your body burns stored carbs at a given rate (your CCLL), and stores about 100g in your liver. You need to flush that out to enter ketosis. The more carbs you eat, the longer it takes to flush. Since most people feel rotten during the initial transition, getting it over quickly is a Good Thing. So, 20g is enough to get proper nutrition through salad veggies, but small enough to flush your liver quickly. Will you be booted out if you have 21g? No. Are some soups OK? I don't see them on the Atkins acceptable foods page, but some have pretty low carb counts...Should I stick exactly with what's on that page? You can eat things that are made from things on that page. For the first two weeks, avoid anything artificial if you can, because some artificial things have bad side effects for some people when LCing. You want the first two weeks to go well so you'll be psyched about the rest of the diet. |
