Default Computer help???

We returned from a trip, computer seemed ok. Went to dinner and found the
only way I could get on the net was by re-booting. Only lasts a few minutes
and stalls again. First guy replaced LAN card--no help. Second guy
replaced router and a cable. Still same problem. I am able to use Outlook
Express. Any idea? Thanks. Jano

Did you scan for a virus? Try the IE repair?

I had a similar problem. My husband, a programmer, installed a newer
operating system (I was running Millennium) and I have Windows XP
Professional. No more stalls

FTR, hubby sez you have to have a Pentium 1 or better for XP.

Personally, I wouldn't attempt to put XP on a machine older than a
Pentium 3. It won't run worth a damn unless you have at least 128MB
RAM and faster than a 300MHz processor, and it takes about 1.5GB
disk space.

Some P2s and P1s might complete an install of XP, if upgraded to
maximum memory, but it would run like a dog, and most people who have
big problems with XP installed it on old hardware that really wasn't
suitable for it. I've had to un-upgrade a lot of P1s and P2s where
the owners tried upgrading to XP on them.

I'd use a clean install of Win98SE on a P1 or P2. (WinME is usually
its own source of problems, and IMO should be replaced with 98SE or
XP, depending on the hardware.)

Pat, FOB, Cookie, jamie:

I've printed your responses. What is IE repair? My computer is Windows 98
SE and has about 95% memory unused. I do regular Norton updates and have
defragged, and do Windows Critical Updates. Thanks for the ideas. I may
need to get help with following your instructions ( clean install of
Win98SE). Thanks. Jano

To run the IE repair tool, close down all programs that are running (with
CAD). Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, find MS IE5 or 6 (depending
on which version you have), hit the Add/Remove button, you get
your choice of removing, adding components or repairing. Choose repair.
Reboot.

Frankly I hate ME and switched it back to a clean install of Win98SE. It
still stalled. Whata mess! Had to transfer everything to another hard drive
so I could just wipe my hard drive and start over. Using XP really fixed a
lot of problems. When I bought my computer it had Millennium on it. You're
probably right about the processor though. I'd feel more comfortable loading
it onto a Pentium 3 or better but it works on my Old Gateway Pentium 2.

What is IE repair

Internet Explorer

I do regular Norton updates and have

defragged, and do Windows Critical Updates

Well, none of the above helped me either. My problem was running today's
programs with yesterdays operating system

P2s are borderline machines, but they will easily complete an
install(done correctly). I upgraded eight P2/Celerons(400-533 Mhz),
and two P1's(120Mhz). The P1s are crappy backup machines, but the P2
and Celerons are all acceptable if they have 128Mb or more. Nothing
you can give to a power user, but fine for basics of office function.
They all run WinXP-SP1, & Office 2003.

All the PCs performed better with 128Mb & XP than 32-64Mb & 98SE.

A lot of upgrades are munged because people don't check compatibility
and uninstall problem software such as all utilities(memory, security,
antivirus) before attempting an OS change.

I'd use a clean install of Win98SE on a P1 or P2. (WinME is usually
its own source of problems, and IMO should be replaced with 98SE or
XP, depending on the hardware.)

If you can use Outlook Express to get and send mail but can't use
Internet explorer than there isn't anything wrong with LAN card,
Routers, cables, ISP service, etc.

If you only had a modem I would suspect a virus going wild and
drowning you out from using your own connection. A slow computer can
have the same effect.

Depsite having AV installed, there exists the possibility that a virus
has gotten in and damaged your AV configuration to prevent AAV from
detecting it. I've come across that multiple times.

I would first download another browser, such as netscape, and see if
it performs better. If so than there is an IE problem and
reinstalling it may help. If it does not perform better with netscape
navigator than there are network problems on your end independent of
IE. Hope this helps a little.
